  • Ok it is not perfect but I would still buy it again. This is what I have found playing with it. Yes, it will take you back to the marked location, maybe not dead straight to it but you will get there. Yes the GPS sat takes about 45 seconds to connect when you first turn it on. That\'s in the open might take longer if you are in dense trees. I have used in walking through a dense pine forest and it works fine just figure even in the open it is going to have to recalculate every now and then but it is real brief (maybe one or two seconds every so often) no big deal. Just remember to hold this thing flat in front of you and not vertical in front of you face. No brainer, right. The compass function, well, I suggest you buy a real compass. To get this thing to be close to right I had to hold it flat in front of me, walk about 3-5 paces then stop and turn around in a complete circle. Then it would be pointing fairly close to north, most every time. Walking along a straight line in open sky the north arrow would bounce around about 45 degrees either way. I didn\'t buy it for the compass function so I don\'t really care. It can apparently go up to 999 miles away from a marked location. I\'ve only used it to about 700 yards so I can\'t verify any other distance. I also think, not sure, that if you turn it on a good ways from the last place you used it it will take GPS an additional 10-30 seconds to connect and the same if you use it one day and then wait several days before you use it again. Yes it has a back light and it will turn itself off after a short period of time (don\'t remember how long) unless you push a button. Also pushing one (maybe either) button will turn on the back light for a few seconds. You can also switch from english to metric measurement.
  • I already own a complicated and comprehensive GPS device, loaded with topo maps and advanced capabilities. I purchased the Backtrack G2, however, precisely because it doesn\'t have all those features. Most of the time when traveling (especially overseas), all I need to know is how to get back to my hotel or car after having wandered about for hours down winding streets in unfamiliar cities. The Backtrack G2 lets you mark a maximum of three locations (you must do so while at the location--you cannot enter coordinates or addresses). It then functions as a simple compass pointing you in the right direction. It will not show routes or paths--it will simply show you which way to go when you become hopelessly turned around. That is all I wanted from the Backtrack G2, and that is what it does. I admit to having a lousy sense of direction, and on more than one occasion I\'ve struggled to find my hotel in Amsterdam or gotten temporarily lost while hiking the hills and forests of Ireland and England. Yes, I have GPS apps on my iPhone, but while overseas, those require using roaming data which, without a data plan, is extraordinarily expensive. Plus, you cannot depend upon cell phone coverage in the hinterlands. The G2 is lightweight, relatively compact, and tells me which direction to go and how far away my destination is. Most of the time, that\'s all I need.Complaints? Acquiring satellites takes longer than I would like, and acquisition is almost impossible in a narrow street hemmed in by tall buildings. You do need an open view of the sky, but of course, that can be said of any GPS. It could also be a little smaller. But, these are not deal-breakers. For its low cost, ease of use and relatively good battery life (I use rechargeable AAAs), if it keeps me from getting lost, I\'m happy.
  • Very useful device and I\'ve tested it a lot over the past couple of years. It isn\'t precise to the foot, but it sure gets the job done. The big thing is to pay attention to keeping the batteries fresh and view the pointer as more of an approximation and to stop and give it time to orient itself. The other big thing is to keep it level when taking a bearing. I tend to use it in spot checks to find my way and it has always been reliable. I\'m extremely impressed with it and use it as it was intended to be used with the occasional checks to track my progress and not as a \"always on\" GPS unit like the one in my car... I also like how it keeps the old saved locations in memory when changing batteries and it has kept the memories even when I\'ve left the batteries out for long periods of time. Good piece of kit and worth getting.
  • I must confess that I am accustomed to higher end Garmin handhelds costing much more so it\'s not a fair comparison. Still, I am disappointed. It\'s slow to start-up and lock on and when walking around it\'s wildly varying pointer does not instill confidence. I keep it clipped to my hunting backpack and use it as a plan B but I have never developed a confidence in it\'s ability to get me home. When I\'ve used it it does work but it can sometimes lead you on a zig zag heading in the general direction and I soon learned to think of everything in \"generalities\". I just find it disconcerting to be walking in a straight line and have it suddenly point 45 degrees from it\'s previous indication. Eventually it will get you there and it\'s pretty good for the price but can not be compared to a high quality hand held GPS.
  • I bought this for a camping/on-the-road trip for my Fiancee and I. I tested it when i got it by marking my house, and walking to my mailbox. It worked for what it needed it. My only complaint is that you have to hold it flat/parallel with the ground. I guess this goes with being a compass based item. If you don\'t the arrow just points in random directions. That, and the fact that it takes a very long time for it to initially get it\'s connection. It took approximately 10 minutes upon first use. Every time after it was almost immediate. We tested this while in Utah (I live in Kansas) and it stated that we were 999 miles from home. I\'m guessing that 999 is the technical limitation, but i was surprised that it pointed in the correct direction, and continued measuring distance while off.HIGHLY recommend.
