Garmin Nuvi 50LM Navigator

  • I have been dragging my feet on getting a GPS for some time and after careful consideration and reading a LOT of reviews, I decided to get this one. I\'m glad I did.Now I AM an admitted \"gadget freak\" and have been playing with electronic toys for years and this is a great toy. It works very well and I have found it to be remarkably accurate and fun to use. For one who needs to find new or unfamiliar locations while driving, a GPS would make life so much easier and this model seems very capable.Since this is my first and only GPS, I cannot fairly compare it to any other devices. What I can say is this works very well for me and just as described. In my experience so far (driving around the Winston Salem, Greensboro, North Carolina area) I have found this very accurate, helpful and fun to use.Right after I received this from \"Amazon\" (at a great price and fast ship), I installed the appropriate \"Garmin\" website software for this model \"Nuvi 50LM\" as indicated with the clearly written instructions. The software installed with no problems on my PC and when I connected the GPS to my PC with the provided cable, it updated the maps in about 5 minutes with no problems or confusion. This model does come with \"Life Time\" map updates (LM) and it appears to work both easily and well for those updates.I then connected it in my car through power from my cigarette lighter with the provided cable. The screen is very clear and easy to read, even in bright sunlight. It found the satellites very quickly and with minimal use of the provided instructions, it was intuitively easy to program and use. Remember, this is my FIRST GPS, but I found it easy to understand and program.I then programed a destination I already know to see what it would do. It worked flawlessly and I was quite intrigued with how easy it was to read and follow with the clear screen and \"verbal\" (female) voice instructions. The compass bearings and \"Speed Limit\" indications were remarkably accurate and a great feature in my opinion. I then put in specific destinations of local stores and businesses in the Greensboro, NC area and this GPS continued to work very well for me.I have only had this GPS for about 6 weeks now and have only been using it locally. Even in this short amount of time, I have found it easy to use, a great screen size and clarity for visual use and the \"verbal\" voice instructions to be great. I still find the default female voice to be fine with me. As some reviews have noted, the \"verbal\" instructions can sometimes \"mangle\" the pronunciation of some street names but that does NOT bother me. Heck, the way some streets are named, even I would \"mangle\" the pronunciations. If one does not understand the \"verbal\" street name, a quick glance at the \"purple route line\" on the screen is helpful and easy to understand in my opinion.I have admittedly not been able to test this on a long trip yet but with the performance I\'ve seen so far locally, I would guess this will work well most anywhere within it\'s capabilities of the continental United States. For my purposes and expected use, I am so far very pleased and impressed with this device.Even though I am a \"newbie\" GPS user and I haven\'t had this for very long, this \"Garmin Nuvi 50LM\" is clear to \"read\", easy to follow, and easy to understand for voice directions. It also has all the features I need. I would recommend it.UPDATE: Since I wrote the above review of only local use of this GPS, I have had the chance to test it for a longer trip. I went from Winston Salem, North Carolina to Richmond, Virginia. This is about a 4 hour trip and included local roads as well as Interstate Business 40 (from North Carolina) to Interstate 40 to Interstate 85 and then to Interstate 95. I drove in full sunny daylight and with normal (not too busy) traffic. This GPS continued to please me. Even while I was paying \"highway attention\" on the interstates, glances at this GPS screen were clear and easy to understand. I especially liked its ability to \"verbally describe\" and show (on the screen) lanes to stay in to take appropriate exits. I am a 62 year old male who wears glasses and is getting a bit \"hard of hearing\". I still found the screen easy to see and \"read\" and easily understood the \"verbal\" directions. This GPS not only did very well describing and explaining the route on the interstates, it also did very well with the local roads at both ends of the trip. Now I still admit I have only used this GPS but I remain both pleased and impressed with this device. So far, it has completely met my expectations and does exactly what I expected it to do and with better ease of use and clarity than I expected. Some reviews still say it may have an \"early failure\" or stop working after a short time of use. I have only had and used this one for only 7 weeks now but hope it will continue to work well for me for a long time.I would still highly recommend this model \"Garmin Nuvi 50Lm\" GPS.UPDATE: I have now owned this \"Garmin\" GPS for about a year and a half and I am still very pleased. I have now used this GPS device for innumerable local trips all around central North Carolina including cities (in North Carolina) from Statesville, Winston Salem, Greensboro and Burlington. I have also used it for several long distance trips from North Carolina to upstate New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Connecticut. It is still working flawlessly and accurately.I especially like the \"speedometer\" indication on this device. As you are driving, this GPS will show your present driving speed. If you are being a \"good boy\", it shows your speed in the color green. If you decide to go \"lead foot\", it will show your speed in the color red. I am totally amazed at how precisely accurate this device is in knowing not only the speed you are presently driving but also the speed changes on the interstates. As you may enter a slower speed zone near a city and the speed limit on the interstate changes from perhaps 65mph to 55mph, the GPS will display the speed change almost immediately as you enter the slower zone. I not only find that amazing (hey, I\'m an old guy and easily impressed), I really like that feature.I have done two software updates to this device from the \"Garmin\" website through my computer. After connecting the GPS to my computer, I simply followed the easy instructions from the \"Garmin\" website and the \"Lifetime Map Update\" did just that without any hassles.Overall, I remain very pleased with this gadget. \"Garmin\" and their competitors have several other and newer models of GPS devices now as advanced technology marches on. Though this particular device of mine (model \"nuvi 50LM\") is now \"dated\" it is still well supported by \"Garmin\" and is still one of my favorite toys.I would STILL highly recommend this device.
  • My previous GPS (Magellan) also came with \"lifetime\" map update but after one update which went fine, it refused to do further update. I have dealt with Magellan customer service and after getting no satisfaction to the issue I decided to come back to Garmin.Nuvi 50 was on sale so it was worthwhile for me to get slightly bigger 5 inch model rather than 4.3 inch model. It is basic in that it has no bluetooth and other \"extra\" feature that I really have no use for. Aside from \"lifetime\" map update, it also had one feature that I wanted which is to indicate speed limit of highway and streets. Depending on where you\'re travelling certain jurisdictions of cities and freeways are nothing but speed trap and often you will not see the posted speed limit sign until you\'re too late. For those new into purchasing GPS, I bid you welcome. Good GPS will do a lot to alleviate figuring out how to get from Point A to Point B smoothly and efficiently (usually). However, it is not going to be 100% perfect in execution so I suggest you carry map of the area you are going to travel (just in case GPS fail). When you open the box, you will find Nuvi 50 with no plastic wrappers. Lift the unit out of box and lift the cardboard box beneath it and you will find, car charger, USB cable, window mount, paper for \"Need a dashboard disc?\", \"Activate your Lifetme Maps\", \"Important Safety and Product Information\", \"Free Trial Update Your Safety Camera\" and no owner\'s manual but there is quick start guide that is only apparent if you open the paper showing picturegram of mounting GPS to windshield of car. In it you will find quick-start picturegram so basic I can\'t believe what length Garmin went to cut cost.1) Type in Garmin web address on your computer\'s browser. (Earlier I typed in web address but Amazon did not like it. Don\'t know why.)2) Connect GPS using included USB/mini USB cable to your computer3) Register your Garmin once you open an account.4) Download updater so that you can get the latest map.Other reviewers have already noted, be forwarned that update of map will take time. During download of new map, at one point, updater will instruct you to detach GPS from computer and turn the unit on. This is to allow the GPS to load what was already downloaded into the unit.Once GPS finished loading the update you will be instructed to attach the unit via USB to computer again and continue updating process. Just follow the instruction given and all will be fine. The actual registering and downloading updater went smoothly for me. The updater will notify if there is any available map update. Those interested can download owner\'s manual from Garmin site but this GPS (to me at least) was so easy to operate that I find no need to read it. Still, for those buying their first GPS it might be good idea to peruse the manual.AC charger is not included and really there is no need to purchase one. Use the supplied USB cable and charge your GPS from your computer. In actual operation, the GPS worked fine for the most part but compared to my previous Magellan Roadmate 1424 LM, I found that Garmin was slower in doing reroute/recalculating. Whereas Magellan was quick to give revised direction if I deviate from route, I noticed that Garmin was sometimes noticeably slower in giving revised direction; a minor quibble but still noticeable if you have owned another brand GPS.I will be adding additional update (positive or negative) if there is need to as I have had this unit for few days only and haven\'t had chance to really give it a go. But for the brief time I have had it is a keeper.***UPDATE 06/12/12***It may or may not be an issue but on my nuvi 50, I have determined that reroute feature will not kick in immediately if I deviate from route given by Garmin during the first initial guidance.Example: I turn on the GPS. I input address or favorite. GPS give first guidance: \"Proceed on highlighted route on (street you are driving).\"The way my home street is laid out it is better to take opposite route initially to get to main street where I am heading due to traffic. My old Magellan GPS also gave same guidance initially but it learned to adjust guidance after I deviated a few times. Nuvi 50 seem to be unable to do that (for now).Magellan also excelled in guessing correct address with few keystroke. I had to type street almost all the way on some addresses on nuvi 50 before it filled the rest of the field. If you pick different voice some of them will not give street names. However, in the voice setting it will clearly tell you which one of them will give street names or not in parenthesis. I guess this is Garmin\'s way to save money. On my old Magellan, it was slow in catching GPS signal during initial power up. By comparison, Nuvi 50 was very fast in catching satellite signal.Taking into account of what I have so far I find Garming Nuvi 50 to be:POSITIVE:- East of operation- Fast signal capture- Split screen lane assist (some reviewers did not like it but I like it.)- Where available will post speed limit- Accurate guidance (for the most part)NEGATIVE:- Reroute slow in some situation (see above)- Not all voices will give street names- Although I have latest map update, map still not showing new layout of freeway exit near my place
