MasTrack- GPS Tracker W/No Contract | Track On Computer Smartphone | Fleet Monitoring Tracking Employees, Teens, Spouse| Plug Into OBD Port Instant Alerts & Engine Diagnostics
- That\'s the usual trifecta. Completely plug-n-play. Installation a snap (literally). I do recommend you get a right-angle OBD extension cable of about 3 feet, which will allow you to wire-tie both the MasTrack and cable up out of the way rather than it sticking down obtrusively from your under dash OBD port. From time I first plugged it in, to time I was watching live positional data on the map was about 10 minutes. This includes the time it took me to go register an account at their website, activate the device, and sign up for a monitoring plan. The user interface on the website (as others have noted) is a bit clunky but if you are just a little bit tech saavy and used to such things you won\'t have any trouble navigating it. The lack of a dedicated mobile app is why 4 stars instead of 5. You can make do with a mobile browser, and I don\'t mind that, but really... there is just no excuse not to have an app.One other thing, because it is portable (a strength) it is easy to remove (a weakness, depending on why you are using it). You will know if this happens, or if it is moved to another vehicle but that is small comfort if your tracking just winks out because the device was unplugged. That is why I recommended using an extension cable to hide it away from the OBD port. You can purchase serialized plastic security loops/seals to wrap around it and help identify when/if this happens, although it would have been nice if they thought to include a hole in the clam shell itself to facilitate doing this.Bottom line is I wanted something that was plug-and-play, quick and easy, and not enormously expensive. This is all of these. Long term reliability? No clue. Time will tell. But my initial impression is very positive, enough so that I came back to rate it.
- This is a completely re-written review. I had previously given this product 2-stars, but that was due to a combination of miscommunication and unrealistic expectations. As you can see, I changed my rating to 5-stars... I am rounding up from 4.5 stars. This product is very good... just not perfect. Chances are, it is exactly what you are looking for.First off, let me warn you: depending on your state, it may be illegal to use this product. You may want to research this. In Texas, I can legally use this, because even though I am not the driver, I am the owner of the vehicle (that may not be enough in your state). The next issue I had with the product was that I had questions about the normal operation of the device. I studied the online documentation, and there was no troubleshooting section. Not sure if there was a contact phone number, but I didn\'t see it. I mistakenly got the impression that this company was a small seedy company that didn\'t have a customer service department. One night I got frustrated and left the 2-star review. Mea Culpa. My apologies to Mastrack. They contacted me because I was displeased. I should have just emailed them with my questions. They have been very responsive and helpful. I chose email communication, so I can\'t comment on the phone service, but my negative impression of them initially was all my fault, they didn\'t deserve it. The only thing I can fault them on is the information on their website. If I could have learned the information I learned from support, then my expectations of what the product can and cannot do would have been more realistic. So I am sure you are wondering: what is it that I had such a problem with the device. There are several factors of which you need to be aware. Any one factor happening would cause mild confusion, but when they all happen, it seems like the device is erratic and malfunctioning. Now that I know about them, I can figure out what is going on at any given time. Here is what you need to know about the Mastrack (and this is probably true about other similar products):1) If the device cannot get a good position from the satellites, then it doesn\'t tell you anything at all.2) If the device temporarily has poor or no cellular service, then it saves the data points and dumps them all on you once cell service is restored.3) The \"time to first fix\" (TTFF) is variable depending on several factors. For techies, there is a wikipedia article that explains it, but I will explain a little here. The device downloads from the satellites information about the satellites every 15 minutes when it is in use. If the car starts up and the satellite info is old, you have to wait until some satellite info is downloaded before it can figure out where it is (GPS info). As a result, the first position after starting up the car may be (up to) 15 minutes from where the vehicle started up. In actuality, most times, the start up position was where the car was... just not every time. The problem I had was that the device was in a vehicle that often parked in a structure that had poor/no cellular service. Sometimes it would be between tall buildings that would affect visibility of the satellites. So, if you start the car in a location where it can\'t get a good fix, then you will have to wait for the TTFF (approx. 15 min) plus you won\'t see a data point after that if in those 15 minutes the vehicle drove to somewhere the satellites are blocked (like near tall buildings) and then if the car drives somewhere there is poor cellular service, again you won\'t get data. Some days, all 3 of those would happen. Somedays only 1. Until I understood these effects, I was frustrated and confused. Now I can tell you the device operates very predictably. Even on days when all 3 of those factors would be in effect, that would only affect a brief period of time, and the rest of the day I was receiving positional data. These factors have a greater impact when you are concerned about live positional data. If you are looking at historical data, it is less of a big deal, because for all the data you don\'t get due to a loss of cellular signal strength, once the cellular signal is restored, you\'ll see all that historical data.Installation is ridiculously easy. Takes 5 minutes of online research to find the OBD port for your car, then 5 seconds to install. Online, you can set up various alerts. It sends me a text message with position each time the vehicle is turned on and off. You can also ask it to notify you of harsh braking and excessive speed and a few others. You can communicate with the device with any SMS enabled phone, but the description of the location is not as good as the online mapping. The online mapping is difficult to use with an iPhone/iPad, but it works. A native iOS app would be a lot better.IN SUMMARY, if you are using this to keep an eye on a vehicular asset, this is an exceptional product. If you are using it for live tracking of a vehicle, it is very good and will work almost all the time. I showed it to a police officer friend of mine, and he was impressed on how this technology is in many ways better than what the police are using.
- UPDATED REVIEW 6/6/15After hearing back from MasTrack, with them indicating that a non-readable OBD tracker would solve all my issues in my vehicle, I went ahead and ordered it directly from MasTrack (they told me that Amazon does not stock the non-readable OBD device). I paid $215 for a pre-paid annual 1 minute reporting service plan and they provided the OBD device at no charge. Not a bad deal if it would have worked. So, with great anticipation, I plugged this pre-activated OBD tracker into my vehicle\'s OBD port. I then turned the key to start the car. Nothing. Nada. The car wouldn\'t even turn over. This is the same issue that occurred with the MotoSafety OBD device. They basically told me that it is an issue that likely couldn\'t be resolved. MasTrack thought that the non-readable version of their device would overcome this issue, as well as a communication issue that developed on my first MasTrack. Unfortunately, it did not.Since the device is not compatible with my vehicle, I have submitted a support ticket to obtain an RMA to return this device for a full credit. Since their previous customer support has been pretty decent, I do not anticipate any issue in getting the credit. So, while it appears most vehicles would do well with the MasTrack, neither the MasTrack or the Motosafety version worked with my vehicle.I am still giving this company 3 stars, as their communication from their customer service group has been pretty decent.UPDATED REVIEWAfter receiving a call from someone at MasTrack, who was extremely cordial and willing to make the changes on their end to resolve the issue (see the Company comments below), I am re-rating MasTrack. The reason I increased the rating to 4 stars (from 1 originally) was that the 2nd product I installed also had some difficulties, although not as severe as the MasTrack product. Therefore, it appears that my vehicle is one of those cars that the OBD computer has some trouble in the communication protocol for external devices, regardless of the product manufacturer. Since MasTrack had offered to make some config changes on their side (they claimed this would resolve the issue, although some functionality would be lost), I feel their customer service truly takes their customers seriously and they really want to resolve any issue that is presented. With that said, I returned the competing device (see other review on my account for details) and will contact MasTrack again to see if they can make their OBD device work in my vehicle.Once I have further information, I will update this review, but for those looking for a product that apparently works very well in most cases, and with great customer support, I wouldn\'t hesitate to give MasTrack a try. (MasTrack, I will be contacting you in the next couple of days to determine if the fix you had in place would in fact work for my vehicle. If so, I will re-order it and give them another go at it.Ordered this product with high hopes, based on previous reviews. As always, AMAZON IS THE BEST. 5 stars for Amazon. The problem is with the product. It arrived in the usual Prime 2 days. Read the directions. Registered the product online, where I ran into difficulty in the MasTrack system accepting the serial number. I called MasTrack and was immediately connected to an individual who was able to assist quickly and professionally. So far, so good, right? WRONG. I installed the device in the vehicle and went to the tracking website. Sure enough, the car was found, where expected, in my driveway. I took a drive and looked at the iPhone app for MasTrack, only to see the vehicle sitting in the same place it was when I plugged it in to the OBD port.I then called MasTrack back for assistance. Again, very professional, but after he said he needed to check something and after coming back 30 minutes later, the device still wasn\'t working and the tech had no idea why it wouldn\'t track. He then indicated that they needed an hour or so to troubleshoot the situation. I waited well over 3 hours and called MasTrack back. They said they still didn\'t know why it wasn\'t working. I explained that my concern was that if they can\'t get it to work when it is new out of the box, then my concerns would be how reliable will it be a month from now or later. I asked for a refund to my service agreement (I had opted for a 1 min update interval for 3 months at $20 per month, which I would have gladly paid if the service worked. Unfortunately, this was a big FAIL.)On the plus side, the MasTrack folks were nice and the refund on their service was promptly provided. The downside is that I expected the product work out of the box and now it\'s time to search for a replacement device that actually will work as advertised.
