• I thought I would never need this. After all, I own a hand-held GPS and my phone has one too, so I know my home coordinates and even wrote them down on the telescope tripod leg. I found that entering the coordinates AND the time/date EVERY time I wanted to align the telescope took too much time, so I would just look around for the objects I wanted to view. I found that I was spending more time trying to find messier objects than it would have taken to enter the coordinates.The solution was to spend the bucks and buy this. It simply works. It does the heavy lifting and lets me spend the time doing what I bought the telescope to do--look at the sky.Yes it is expensive, but a lot less than the smart phone with it\'s GPS, or even a good hand-held GPS, and the savings in time make it worth it to me.
• I bought this as an add-on accessory for my NexStar 4SE. First off, it does give the StarAlign your position and time, however you still need to perform the calibration via the handheld controller which is less than ideal.As I am a hobby astronomer, this device proved to be overkill and thus is getting sent back.
• I\'ve been a serious penny pincher lately and it tore me apart to spend so much on a GPS, especially when I can obtain coordinates from my phone. But, truth of the matter is, the places I bring my scope to hardly ever have service, and even when I can get the coordinates myself, they always seem a tad bit off. I\'ve never been able to get even a decent alignment with my Celestron NexStar 6 SE. I\'m a complete and absolute beginner and no matter what I do, I\'ve just never been able to get it.Until I bought this. The wonderful thing about the SkySync is that it works everywhere, and everywhere is exactly where I bring my scope. I bought it to bring to different dark parks, and across the country when I go. It is a beautiful thing to just be able to turn the scope on, select Daylight Savings, align it with 3 totally random bright stars, and have it work so incredibly flawlessly. I bought this scope so I could see some amazing things, and with the SkySync, I can see everything so easily because it gives my scope such accurate, on point data. It\'s even a lifesaver when it comes to time input- I can\'t possibly set it to the exact second like this can.Everything has to be pretty much perfect for me to be able to see deep sky objects, especially because they are often hard to spot as it is. The first night I brought my scope out with SkySync, to a dark park, we got it perfectly aligned on the first try and we were able to see everything. Alignment took about 2 minutes and we were able to select items from the menu on our scope- it was able to perfectly point to every single one. I still can\'t get over it. It was so easy and we were able to see it all.It\'s very small, light and durable too. My only complaint, aside from the price, is the location that it\'s supposed to sit- it fastenes onto the tripod leg. I often have to unfasten it and place it on the base platform of the tube of the scope because, as my scope moves and turns around, the SkySync cord wraps around it!So, yes, it\'s expensive and a bit overpriced, yes, it really does just input the coordinates and time, yes, you do still have to align it, but it really makes a world of difference. Especially if your a beginner like me, that doesn\'t want to deal with the hassle, and the guessing, and the frustration. It\'s worth it and makes the entire experience even more enjoyable. I always use the three star align, the others are a little too difficult for me- like I said, I\'m a beginner. I just want to set my scope up and go, and with the SkySync, I can, and I can see the most incredible things.
• Cord could be longer for the price.
• This GPS is so great, I ordered another one for my father. It\'s so nice to be able to go to friends house or setup anywhere, and not fumble in the dark for a cell phone to find the time and convert DMS time into decimal or something, or worry about \"is it DST time now or not?\". I watched my father get very frustrated with all those things, and cringed when he just rounded to the nearest degree or minute, or he assumed a town entry 200 miles away was good enough... Yes, it\'s simple information to enter, unless you forgot your cell phone, or its low battery, or your answering tons of other questions at the same time and getting distracted.For visual work, this is entirely unnecessary. But for deep sky imaging, accuracy is very essential. That being said, this will make visual work more pleasant for all the same reasons (just it is less critical, since you typically can\'t observe deep sky anyway and planets are relatively easy to find and track).While I do like this product (it clamps well, it works well once enabled from the HC menu, the cable is sufficient long enough), my two complaints are: (1) I think it\'s a lot of mark up for a GPS chip; this thing cost as much as full hand-held GPS units, and doesn\'t even have a LCD display or WiFi; it better be a dang accurate GPS at this price, but I suspect it\'s just standard issue no better than all our cell phones have. (2) I\'ve had to wait as long as 3 minutes several times to get a good accurate GPS signal. And it\'s confusing on when the HC starts up, it says \"Press ENTER to Accept or Wait for GPS\" (or similar); I don\'t know if I press ENTER will it automatically continue to refine the GPS accuracy in the background, or is 99% of the time just pressing ENTER close enough (I never got clarification from the manual). But that\'s a nit since I\'m usually setting up other things during that time.Despite my nits, this absolutely gets the job done with no fuss. I just wish for the price, it at least had an independent LCD to output what it has computed (GPS in degree or DMS, and the time -- you can access these through the HC, but I\'d rather a separate LCD with a button to hold to turn on a backlight for it).
