  • I have a Garmin GPS I used in my car, but its not appropriate for truck drivers which is why I purchased this one. In my truck, I have Navigo which if you make a wrong turn, it just tells you to go back to the road behind you. I bought the Garmin to give me not only alternative routes & time, but to help me safely get back to my route since trucks are limited to where it can go and cannot make U turns. For the price and to be a GPS for trucks, I am a little disappointed in its capabilities:1. It will take you down some roads including residential roads, that trucks ought not go.2. It sometimes will tell you there is no route to your destination because trucks are restricted when there are no restrictions for trucks on the route.3. You cannot edit routes (ie. Garmin places you on I-95 and you want to alter it to take you via another route, no edits are available).4. If you put in an address for the origin and an address for the destination, it will automatically route you from where you are. I needed to see in advance the routes, miles and time before I get to the origin.5. It will calculate time based on maximum speeds throughout the routes. There is no capability to enter average speed. When driving through mountains, inclimate weather, and known congestive traffic, you cannot go maximum speed; thus, alters your time of arrival. Sometimes speed limits on highway are slower than what Garmin has established.6. It will also route you on roads whereby you have to turn beyond 90 degrees at an intersection, It takes a lot of real estate to turn these rigs and I try to avoid those type turns.7. I would have like to have seen where you can locate rest stops and indicate those stops as interim destinations.Don\'t get me wrong, I use the GPS but I scrutinize the routes carefully and don\'t have a lot of faith it will turn you around safely and legally if you miss your turn. When I can afford a more expensive GPS, I will shop around again. Hopefully by that time, Garmin will have made some improvements and will be among my choices.I will have to add that I like the details that Garmin shows on upcoming streets, lane changes, highway signs and it give ample notice of upcoming changes so you will have time to get into the correct lane. Elevations is another feature it suppose to have, but so far, I have not been able to get it to show elevations. THis would be extremely helpful when traveling through mountains.UPDATE: 11/30/197. I did find it will locate rest stops, truck stops and other places and give you directions.8. I also found how to use the elevations but it doesn\'t help all that much. It shows elevations from where you are to several miles out. You cannot use it to let you see the next incline or decline coming up or its degrees of slope. If you could adjust it\'s scope then this would be invaluable especially at night when you cannot see the terrain to determine the grades. Being able to see this on the GPS would have been great in preparing you for decsent or climbing. If Googlemap.com ever comes out with a Truck GPS, Garmin better be prepared to compete. This above issues could be factors that could make or break Garmin in the future unless Garmin takes heed to some of the issues customers are compaining about.UPDATE: 03/20/20 - I had trouble updating the device using my computer. I contacted Support (5 star). They answered expeditiously and the gentleman who assisted me was very informative and helpful. He helped me get the GPS updated wirelessly. It was disappointing to know it only has a limit of 100 saved trips, he said the limit was stated as less than that. There is no way to add more storage space to increase the ability to have more saved trips. Garmin should look at this on their newer models. My planned fix is to keep a journal of GPS Long/Lat reference to locations which may be easier to put in than to re-enter the addresses. Time will tell. Bottom line - Garmin Support was a great help. Hopefully, after the updates, some of the false truck restrictions and non-locatable address will be resolved. Will update again in the future.
  • A winner. Out of the box took 5 seconds to get satellites, now usually takes 2 to 4 seconds. Longest was 20 seconds. Screen is bright and easy to read in sunlight. Auto-zoom can be turned off. You can choose 2D or 3D display. You can choose to see upcoming services (restaurants, gas, etc) or not to have them on the map. I like those not to be on the map because they are big blue squares that cover up too much of the map for me. You can tap your car icon in the center of the map, and up pops a screen with all sorts of info about your location, and on the right side you can pick services such as gas, restaurants, or hospitals, and once you tap one, it will take you there. Information display boxes on the bottom right and left, the left one tells your speed (cannot be changed) but the right one can easily be set to show freeway mile markers (my favorite), or estimated time of arrival, or elevation. To my surprise mile markers are not only shown on the interstate but also major US highways, like US 84 and US 231 here in Alabama. The map can be set for sparse, medium, or busy (I like busy), and can have always-north orientation or turn with the vehicle. There is a small scale indicator showing you how far you are zoomed in, and how big a mile would be on the map. The green top ribbon on the display shows upcoming cross-streets and warnings for drops in speed limit, school zones, railroad crossings and sharp curves ahead. It warns on nearby red light cameras even when you are on the freeway and the camera is on the surface street below, a bit of a startle the first time I saw that. The unit has very little lag. At 30 mph you may be past a cross street 30 feet before the display flips to the next cross street. At 35 mph it takes the gps 2 seconds to show that the railroad crossing has been passed. The icon identifying the vehicle can be set to a variety of graphics. I chose a blue triangle. There is a yellow arrowhead but it has a red tip on one of the rear fins, giving me the impression that this is the direction in which we are headed. Unfortunately, you cannot customize the color of the triangle. There are many graphics including trucks and vans. Routing is excellent and the maps are up to date even in my neighborhood where there has been a lot of recent building and new roads. Updating the map is easy (and strongly recommended when you take the unit out of the box). Unsnap the unit from the dash holder, plug its cable into your computer, download garminexpress.exe, and that program will do all the rest automatically. It gives you warnings that update might take three hours but mine took 15 minutes. In the truck, the unit comes on automatically when it gets power. The ball joint mount allows the unit to be pointed in any direction you want. There seem to be no flimsy plastic parts that are just waiting to break. I have the 5-inch screen which is plenty big for me. All in all, an excellent unit with lots of ways to customize. Sorry I have not tried voice recognition.
  • It does primarily what it should & in my humble opinion is the best choice 4 such a job as this! It does get confused at times. But overall this GPS performs as it should! The price is a bit high… but hey, we live here- in America- the capitalistic center of the entire world! So really, we could be paying a lot more 4 this Gps.
  • I use this along with Google maps. It\'s a nice backup for when your not sure especially with hazmat loads. If I was a van guy I\'d never have purchased this thing. It would be a complete and total waste of money. Even with hazmat say a load going into downtown Columbus it\'ll route you around in circles. When any address inside the 270 loop is legally allowed it\'s just a complete cluster f I actually barely use it anymore unless I\'m totally in a new area. Honestly if I was still withem return time I would return it. And get the Chinese knockoff one. It can\'t be much worse than this thing.
  • I did a lot everything worked
  • I drive a semi and use this on the routes I’m not so sure about. Can’t get voice recognition to work but oh well. Overall it’s well worth the money. Has not sent me down a bad road yet. I do wished it would give me an option to choose a truck route instead of it just choosing for me. But I am happy with it and would buy again. Well worth the money to not get stuck.
  • I had a Garmin 350T for 8 years. And it just bit the dust. I bought updated refurbished model. And so it works great. Did a map up date. That took 9 hrs lol. But so it\'s a workhorse.
