  • I will start off by saying this review is based on my short-term use of my new purchase. I would have started off with a 5-star rating because I do love my nuvi GPS unit but there is a software annoyance that I will discuss as a con in a moment. It was really helpful to read many of the reviews posted on Amazon in aiding me in my choice. Sometimes I think the most difficult thing is determining your choice when there are so many very similar units to choose from. The unit came packed in a great little box that contained the gps unit, usb cord, car charging/power cord and the windshield mount. The power cord is long enough where you have almost an unlimited choice of where to position the unit. I would definitely check your local or state laws (as well as the states you may be driving through) regarding mounting items to the windshield as this varies from state to state. I found I like my unit placed in the upper left hand corner of my windshield which is just about eye level and does not block any field of view while driving. I will confirm the unit stayed firmly in place using the suction cup mount....just be sure to remove the plastic packing film from the base before trying to seal it to the window. I did also purchase an a/c vent clip mount for the unit and find that is a great position as well. More use of the unit will determine which mount I will use as my go to mount. For the moment, and for those quick uses, I like the suction cup mount because it is just quicker to install and detach than the a/c vent mount. The five-inch screen is very nice and yes, there may be some instances where the glare from the outside can be overwhelming but it\'s the same type of glare that reduces the visibility of my clock or radio station indicator lighting. But most of the time the screen has been effectively visible. The thing I like the most is the clarity of the voice for it is the voice I depend on to mainly assist me while driving and prepare me for upcoming turns or lane changes. A great example of the lane indication is the fact that on my road going to my house the road is four lanes but beyond the intersection, the right lane becomes a right turn only lane with no indication of that fact. The Nuvi announced in advance to stay in the left lane so I know this would be beneficial to those visiting the area with no prior knowledge of these kinds of developments.I loved checking speed and arrival time and watching the unit adjust as traffic slowed or stalled. This was just a bonus feature to me.The great news for those of us who live in Hawaii or those planning to visit, I can confirm the unit works great here. Great indicates that it will sync right up and find the satellites right out of the box. Just understand it may not do this until you are outdoors and in the open. So far the routes selected are right on the mark. The only negative aspect here is that the voice murders the Hawaiian named streets at times. If dependent on audio street recognition only this may have been a larger problem but with turn by turn instructions it was not really that big of a deal. Besides, I have been known to mispronounce some street names myself. Now the con that took away an initial 5th star. This may be an issue or may not be, I am not sure at this time. I am always suspicious when software is independently loaded and not part of the initial software download. When I received my unit, I installed the Garmin Express Software without a hitch. Once installed I opened it and everything worked fine...and still does. The thing that makes me wary is that when I look in my programs in the control panel, the Garmin Express Software is listed there and way on down the software list two other programs are now listed that installed at the same time without explanation of why they have been loaded or what they are for. Information seems to be limited on both the Windows Drivers Package Software by Dynastream Innovations and Windows Driver Package Silicon Labs Software. I can\'t verify that this additional software is part of the Garmin Express Software and they are needed to run it or if these items are merely add on software and have no part or role in the running of the Garmin Express Software. I would appreciate any updates that others may have regarding these two programs and if they have any real use or can just be deleted.
  • I recently traveled across the country and purchased this to assist me on the roads I was to travel. While it does not have all the bells and whistles of the more expensive GPS\'s, it contained enough for me to use successfully. It was a great help when you were passing through some of the bigger cities where some main highways can take turns and exits you are not always expecting. The Garmin would warn me about 2 miles out that I needed to get to the right or left to take a certain exit. Which was more than helpful to give me plenty of time to get over without pulling in front of other cars in a frenzy to get to the other side of the hwy quickly. The only frustration is that, typical to a GPS, it will take the easiest, or fastest route to get there. If you are wanting to bypass a large city, but going around it, it is hard to get the Garmin to route it for you. So before you go on unfamiliar roads, it may be worth it to check out your maps and perhaps see what exits you need to take in order to bypass an area and hope that Garmin will reset itself. Although it may try to take you back to the hwy you are avoiding. so watch out. There was a large traffic back up I was coming to. I saw electronic signs pointing it out. I pulled over and used my iPhone to let me know that indeed, there was a very long traffic jam up ahead. It was getting late in the day and since I was not sure how long this would take me to get through, I saw a side road that ran parallel to the hwy and would meet up to this hwy eventually. I took that road and Garmin continually was telling me to turn on the next street to get back on the hwy, but eventually I met up with the hwy, avoiding the traffic jam and Garmin readjusted and we were back on track together.Later, I was passing through the Bay care in Calif. I had wanted to avoid the more traveled roads, but was so tired, I did not want to try to remap it myself and just let Garmin tell me what exits and roads to pull on to get through it and I did just fine. So in general, I think if you follow Garmins instructions, you will still get to your destination. But as mentioned above, if you need one deviation from your trek, you may need to be vigilant and ignore Garmin for a minute. I liked that the screen shows you things such as gas stations you will be passing. Came in handy in Texas as I was starting to look for one and now didn\'t have to worry about passing an exit before I noticed a gas station sign. They can also tell you some of the eateries you will be passing as well.I did use the Find a Hotel feature when I was getting close to stopping. I used one certain hotel at each of my stops along the way. Twice, Garmin did not pick up that this hotel was in the area, even though my hotel app was saying it was close by. So I was able to put in the hotels address (from my iPhone app) and Garmin successfully brought me to this hotel each time. This GPS certainly helped me have a piece of mind while I was traveling. I hope that it continues to work for a while. I travel for work and this has proved to be very useful. I warn that this GPS should be fiddled with while your car is parked, and not in motion. I did have a hard time trying to find a spot on my car window to put the GPS to where it was either not obstructing my view, or not convenient to too at while driving. My dashboard is fairly straight and had a ridge. It was perfect to rest the Garmin on, with the part that you use to hang it on the window as a rest. It did not obstruct my view and easy to look at while in motion. On curves, it did slide a bit, but that was not bothersome to me.
