- I\'ve had a few Nikon GP-1 units and they have not lasted. They are extremely expensive at ~$150 each plus ~$60 for the cable to connect them to the camera. This GPS-N unit is much more compact, costs considerably less, and works just as well. So well that I bought another unit for my other Nikon, a D7200 on which I keep a telephoto lens. The unit even comes with TWO cables and my D500 and D7200 use different cables to attach, so I not only have the right cables, I have an extra for each camera! Even comes with a cable release! Amazing. The cable attachment to the GPS unit sticks out, so I\'m not sure how long it will last, but I have an extra cable if it doesn\'t. One drawback over the Nikon unit is that you have to remember to turn this one on a few minutes before using it so it can acquire satellites. Leaving it on for about three hours without camera being on used about 20% of the camera\'s battery without taking any photos. Luckily I have battery packs for both of my cameras, so probably not an issue for me, but worth noting.
- Have not used it much so I cannot comment on the durability. I takes approx 15 sec for lock from a cold start which is close to the Nikon GP-1 unit I lost. Accuracy seems spot on for my needs. Words mostly like my GP-1 so I am very happy with my purchase, especially as this price.Added comment....I find that the device fits my hot shoe better than the GP-1, so likely to fall off (that is how I lost my GP-1.The only minor complaint I have is that the N3 is like the Nikon and every other N3. I wish they would make the camera connection a right angle connector, then there will be less chance of damaging it. The straight connector gets in the way of everything. This is not only this unit but all devices that use a N3 cable.
- I have a Nikon D7200, so I use the rectangular connector as opposed to the circular one. This review is for the rectangular connector. The device is very accurate, and it\'s fun to plug the coordinates into google maps and see a pin exactly where I was while taking the photo. That being said, it\'s incredibly frustrating that I bought two and the connectors broke within two weeks of purchase. I knew about the fragility of the connectors from other reviews, so I thought \"No problem. I\'ll just be extremely careful.\" and I was. And they still broke. I don\'t know if they\'re just inferior connectors, or the technology just isn\'t there yet, but if the device didn\'t work as well as it did, it wouldn\'t be so frustrating. The circular connector looks to be more durable, so if you have the kind of camera that takes it, I recommend this product and hope that you won\'t run into the same problem I did. Twice.
- Yes, it works! I had hesitated to buy this unit because there was some confusion as to what cameras it would work with. I wish I had gotten it sooner!First, the cameras I own: D500, D750, D7100, D5200Of these (and most Nikon models) there are two common connectors. (N1 and N3) This unit comes with cables to fit them both, the round 10 pin used on higher end cameras like the D5, D500, and more, and the rectangular connector used on the D750, D5200, D7100, etc. Rest assured, it does work on your D500 as I have tested it on all these cameras.Another point of confusion from the small number of questions and reviews here: Yes it comes with an adapter that clips onto your camera strap. AND, yes it comes with a wired remote control and be happy it does as its very useful. It will fire the shutter or can hold it open for a time exposure with a handy easy to use lock feature. Its included with the unit so its just a nice free bonus! As for how this thing will hold up in the long run I will say this: I don\'t know yet. The cables look about the same quality on other devices I have for my Nikon\'s so I can\'t complain at this price point. My experience has been that OEM Nikon accessories (which cost way way more) will be more rugged and last longer under heavy use as you would expect. That said, these aftermarket parts will last if cared for and not abused. If you are an amateur and take care of your gear I would not fear the quality. If you are a hard working pro who really beats his equipment around I would look at professional grade, higher dollar, gear. For the price I paid for this unit I am very well satisfied.Connections: Quick and easy. Plug it in, turn every thing on, go to the tools menu on your camera and make sure you have it set for \"location data\".Turn it on, a green light will blink as it searches. Once it finds its location the light will become a steady green. Its as simple as that. You can view your location on the camera\'s menu or take a photo and see the location and time it was shot on the data for the picture.GPS performance: First time I turned it on I was inside my house and it was taking some time to lock. I took it outside with an open sky and it quickly locked in. After the initial use it seems to lock on signals much better, even working inside my house. In doors it will lock on now in just a few seconds. I am very satisfied with its performance in this regard.I have no idea yet how it will hold up in the long run so I could only give it four stars for Durability. After some use I can come back and revisit this review with updated information. Meanwhile I regret not buying this sooner as it would have been a great help!I am a happy owner and really enjoy this unit! I just wish I had bought one sooner, especially at this price point.
- one downside it easily get disconnected. i used duck tape to glue it to the camera strap. regular connector is easily got decoupled
