Garmin Nuvi 2589LMT North America with Lifetime Map Updates and Traffic Avoidance

  • I spent a couple of weeks comparing various models of Garmin as to size, features, cost, etc. I did a lot of hands on in the stores to become familiar with each of the 4 or 5 models. The 2589 is an ideal unit for my uses. Other models may fit other\'s requirements better so I will just address how well this model perfoms. The 5\" screen is a perfect size for my sedan. In a truck, van, or motor home I would opt for the 7\". I was using a 4.3\" and like the amount of information displayed in both driving and navigation mode. The 7\" would have obstructed my view with the windshield mount too much. The display is bright and all the icons are crystal clear. The responsiveness to turns and recalculating changes is the fastest of any Garmin I previously used. The Voice Recognition responds exceptionally well. It successfully recognizes common words with a hit rate of about 80-90% to verbal commands. The variation is due to background noise, how clearly I speak (pronunciations), and whether the commands fit the context of the inquiry. I absolutely love the fact that I can initiate a route via a trigger command (which I can set/change), speak a full address, verbally verify. and never take my hands off the steering wheel or my eyes off the road.I no longer have to pull off the road and spend a considerable time going from screen to screen and trying to type the address on a screen... without making spelling errors. With voice recognition it takes about 10 seconds vs. 2 or 3 minutes on my other units. There are a host of other commands that allow me to navigate through various other functions verbally. E.g. showing favorites, scrolling forward/backward/up/down. finding points of interest (finding rest areas, gas, shopping), etc.The navigation instructions are superb. Instead of \"turn left or right\" I get human type instructions. It\'s as if I had someone in the seat next to me giving me detailed guidance. The 2589LMT might say \"at the stop sign turn left on Main Street\". Or, \"be in the second lane on the left and make a left turn at the end of the street, then move into the far right lane\".When in navigation mode I often get an actual street view picture of a highway exit, or an intersection, which automatically pops up on the right of the screen with a verbal and map instructions to put me in the proper lane for upcoming turns. If I miss a turn the Garmin recalculates my route within a couple of seconds.I have paired my smartphone to the Garmin and can make and receive handsfree calls inside and outside of my automobile. The voice quality is not as good as my cell phone but easy to hear and understand... I tested this by voice calling home and leaving a voice mail on my home phone. It paired very easily with my phone to access my phonebook and contacts. This unit has some free built in applications (e.g. FourSquare) and others available with a subscription. Complex directions are vastly improved. In the past I could navigate to a mall but have to drive around to find the specific store or business. Now I get excellent guidance right to the closest entrance to the address in the mall. This just scratches the surface of the many features and uses designed into this unit. But there are some things I personally would like to be different/better. None of these are show stoppers but I will mention them even if others would not care about them.Cons:• Showing the elevation is not available in navigation mode.• The display of the current speed limit is not available on many roads. My older unit display speed limits on nearly 97% of the highway and roads.• Warning of upcoming school zones can be annoying when driving in areas you are already familiar with.• It should be easier to remove the unit from the windshield mount.Pros:• The new display is great; it allows you to pinch and zoom, and to swipe to scroll the map display.• I was able to import my information from my older unit directly to the 2589 using my laptop. I did not have to re-enter 3 years\' worth of saved data.• Daylight viewing of the display is vastly improved over older models.• Cell phone integration was quick and easy, expanding the Garmin\'s usability.• The unit learns your driving preferences over time, and factors them into your route navigation.• The 2589LMT is a great value of size, features, options, and performance. Finally I would recommend that if you are considering this, or other similar units, to spend a little time determining what best suits your needs, expectations, and wallet. The proliferation of models from Garmin is overwhelming and has a significant effect on the MSRP. Narrow down your candidates to between 2 to 4 units and then shop around for the best price.I am extremely happy with this purchase and highly recommend it to anyone as reliable, cost effective, and a quality unit. While not perfect (see Cons above) I actually rate it as 4.8 out of 5 stars.DISCLAIMER: I have no past or current connection with Garmin other than buying and using their product since 2003.
  • This is the fifth Garmin model I\'ve purchased for either myself or family members since 2008. I\'ve enjoyed both long service and good user experiences with each, so I am an admitted Garmin fanboy. With that acknowledged: Garmin exceeded my expectations in almost every way with the navigation features in the Nuvi 2589LMT. The interface is intuitive and refined and navigation performance is outstanding. Voice commands (both \"fixed\" commands for GPS functions --which display on the screen so you don\'t have to memorize them-- and searching for addresses) worked very well. It offers great flexibility in getting destinations input (QWERTY touchscreen keyboard, searches in its internal map database and voice commands each yielded excellent results). Add Bluetooth connectivity (very useful of you have a primitive vehicle without integrated Bluetooth), and included lifetime traffic and map updating for North America, and you get a lot for your money.Out of the box, you\'re presented with a \"ready to operate\" sticker. Nevertheless, I connected this to a PC and checked for updates using Garmin\'s \"Garmin Express\" software. Initially this process was balky, and I was presented with an apparent \"update and restart\" prompt series by Garmin Express Eventually I removed the old version of Express from my Windows 7 machine, downloaded the current version from Garmin. This cured the update issue (and it took less than 15 minutes to backup the other two Garmin units previously being managed by the Express software). Also be aware that it ships with only a quick start poster. The full user guide is a downloadable .pdf from Garmin. Why four stars instead of five? Every Garmin GPS I\'ve purchased prior to this had a matte screen. Garmin inexplicably built this model with a glossy screen...simply not a good choice for a screen that may often be used in direct sunlight. I have purchased an aftermarket  matte screen  protector to mitigate this. Finally, I\'m sad to report the always-pleasant Australian female voice has disappeared from both the integrated options and Garmin\'s support site.Even with these minor stumbles, this is a fine GPS; select with confidence.
