Garmin Forerunner 10 GPS Watch (Violet)

  • I am really enjoying this watch. I have thought about getting a GPS watch for years. But I never bought one because I have small (5.5\") wrists and didn\'t want to run/cycle around looking like I had a trash can lid on my arm. Then I saw this one and did my research and decided to finally take the plunge. No regrets here. I bought the 2.1\" display, which is plenty big enough for me to see the numbers but small enough that it doesn\'t feel enormous on my arm.Yes, the watch has more limitations than your average supercomputer, but if you remember how little it is, and give it time to work itself out, it will generally respond well. I travel a lot and when I arrive somewhere new, I \"Start\" the GPS function well before I want to take it out on a run (eg., in the morning drinking my pre-run coffee) and place it in a window with good sky exposure in order to allow the watch to figure out where in the world it is now located. It usually only take a few minutes, and then I just let the watch return to normal mode (i.e., the GPS function auto-shuts off after a few minutes) until it is time for my run. With one exception, this has allowed me to then go out and start my run seconds after walking outside and re-starting the GPS/run function. The one exception is why I gave the watch 4 instead of 5 stars... I think that in areas with lots of high-rises, the watch might lose its way some times. Not 100% sure that is the issue, but the 2 times I\'ve had brief problems were both in downtown Baltimore, surrounded by high-rises. In the first episode, mentioned above, when I got down on the street to start my run after acclimating the watch to my new location up in my hotel room, it still took several minutes to relocate itself and be prepared to start recording my run. In the same area, at the end of my run around the Inner Harbor as I entered back into the high-rise area, it seemed to lose itself again, staying stuck at 4.97 miles of distance for more than a minute of running, which clearly indicated that the watch was not keeping up with the distance I was moving. That was frustrating even though it didn\'t kill me. In general, the watch is very consistent, and where I live (in central Florida) the high-rise issue is not a problem.I also wore this watch on a 15-mile bicycle jaunt. It recorded everything perfectly. The only shortcoming there was that it recorded my calories used as if I had run that far, even when I switched the activity type to \"cycle\". Maybe they can fix that problem with the next software update.I really like the auto-pause function, so that when I am stopped waiting to cross the street, etc., it keeps track of the time that I am not moving. So, the watch is not pinpoint accuracy perfect, but I keep in mind how small it is, and I am very happy with it. For the size it is, I don\'t think you could expect much more. What I am actually enjoying most is how liberating it is to have a GPS watch. I am no longer \"stuck\" to my known routes/distances and can do more \"exploratory\" runs in areas I am not familiar with, but still keep track of my overall distance/pace.
  • This device is exactly what I needed. I typically run about 6-8 miles. I was looking for a way to track how far I\'d gone, while still being able to check the time. My purple watch does even more than that. It tells me my pace, my average pace, and lets me know my progress. The online Garmin tool helps me keep an eye on my progress. I\'m very happy with it. Why only four stars? Well, to be a bit nit picky, sometimes it takes too long to find me, and I\'ve already run a half mile. Also, battery does wear down from the longer runs. Finally, the auto-pause? Well that did not work at all for me. Hated it. A nice feature, if it worked well, but it doesn\'t. Much better to pause manually. The downside to that - I took too long of a break once and my workout disappeared. I had to start over. So, with a few idiosyncrasies, this is a great device at an affordable price, in groovy purple. I am pleased.UPDATE: 2 years later... my watch is still great, I use it every day. However, the charging cable has worn out and I have to replace it. It is $20, so that is something to consider. It seems that one of the buttons on the charger is permanently depressed and the device no longer connects to my computer and charges slowly or not at all. The watch itself is showing signs of damage from sweat. The screws and metal connectors are rusting. The band has held up well though. The only major flaw I find with this device is that, when I pause for a stretch or potty break on a long run, the pause times out after 5 minutes. I have not found a way to turn this feature off and it is really annoying. The beep is too soft to hear when I am listening to music, so sometimes, my watch ends my workout before I\'m actually finished. The Garmin software is not great, I prefer Strava because I can compare my past runs.
  • This is my first GPS watch, so I don\'t have anything to compare it to. However, I must tell, for the price (comparing to other GPS watches I looked up) it\'s a great product! I wasn\'t looking for anything complicated, and I am fine with it displaying only 2 lines at once (I read other reviewers were upset with it) It\'s not bulky, and I have thin wrists, so it doesn\'t look on me like I am wearing a computer attached to my wrist.Information for NYC locals. I tried this watch in 3 parks where I regularly run. The GPS signal was picked up within 5-10 sec in all of them, regardless of the starting point. The parks are: Marine Park in Brooklyn, Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Central Park in Manhattan. It does give some discrepancy in distance though - I ran a few races in Manhattan, and the standard race of 4 miles would come up as 4.02, 5-miler came up as 5.06. I would think it might be important for some people, but I am fine with that. At the end, I get the results of my races from the club (NYRR), and for my training runs it is not really a biggie - afterall I am not a competitive runner.I absolutely LOOOOVE the website support feature: I can log in my runs now and don\'t have to do any calculations or anything to track my results - the website does it all for me.I can\'t get to try the feature for the treadmill runs, always forget to take it with me, but if it can log in my indoor runs too - this will be the PERFECT watch! I will try to remember to update my review once I check this out.The bottom line is, if you love to run and you\'re on a budget and don\'t want to spend a few hundred $$ on a GPS watch, YET still want to be able to track your runs - this is the watch for you!
