- Update 7/5/16: After having used this for a couple of rounds now, I want to report some drawbacks. These can easily be fixed with a software update. First, it is too easy to miss entering the club selection after a shot. If you forget, it doesn\'t let you go back. It should keep that shot selection screen up until you tell it which club you hit before you can move on to the next screen. Once the hole is over, it asks you for your score, putts hit and if you hit the fairway or went left or right, however, it needs to ask if were in the sand and how many shots in the sand and if you had any penalty shots anyhow many penalty shots on a particular hole. That is important information if you get a bogey or more to know why you did at a later date when you go back and review a round. If you have to punch out a shot and use a 6 iron, you don\'t want that going into the calculation of how far you hit a 6 iron. A punch out should be disregarded in that calculation. Other than that, it works great. This is really a great golf tool and watch. I have the Vivoactive HR as well and the golf function in the X40 is by far superior to the HR. I have only 2 complaints with this watch so far. There is only 1 alarm where they should have multiple alarms as in the Vivoactive HR. If you wake up at different times during the week, you have to set the alarm every day whereby if you had multiple alarms, you can set it once and not touch it again like in the Vivoactive HR. The vibrating alarm is strong and great....much better than the HR. The other BIG issue is that you cannot selectively pick which notifications you get on the watch; it\'s either all or none whereby on the HR, you can choose. These 2 issues are software issues that hopefully Garmin will include in their next update. The screen could be 1/4\" wider but not a big deal.Update 7-11-16 - the golf function works well, however my points above still stand. It absolutely needs to ask about sand and penalties and how many of each on a hole to provide better stats. For example, it asks how many putts and you put in 2. It should bring up a screen that says sand <0> that allows you to keep <0> which indicates you weren\'t in the sand or you could change it to <1> or <2> to tell it how many shots it took you to hit out of the sand. Same goes for penalties. If you hit one out-of-bounds, there is no way to indicate it. It should have a screen that follows sand that says Penalties <0> that you can change to indicate if you had a penalty and how many strokes you were penalized. The last item is the ability to UPDATE after a round. Please Garmin, when we go back and review a round and realize that a mistake was made, it would be important to be able to fix it.Update 7-25-16. After having used this 15 times, I still stand by the above comments. Garmin...you HAVE to be able to track penalties and sand shots....A MUST!. When it asks you what club you hit, you have to be very careful that you enter the right club. No way to change it later. Plus, you have to be able to edit the score after it is saved. When you review it and notice a mistake, you can\'t fix it. Does anyone on your development team play golf and actually used it?
- I have been looking for a smart watch that would be useful for golf, giving distance to the pin. This works pretty accurately for that as well as keeping track of my steps/miles, heart rate and buzzing when I get a text and vibrating when I am getting a call. I really like not having to pull out my phone to see who it is,,,kind of spoils you that way, so nice to just look at your watch. You can\'t answer a text or a call from the phone but still very nice to have that feature. I haven\'t kept score while golfing with it yet and it\'s not quite as accurate as a hand held scope but it gives me a decent idea. I wish it was a little thinner because it gets caught on my sleeve. Other than that I\'m pretty happy with how it functions. I can go several days without charging it except when I use it for golf, then it gets pretty drained by the end of the day and I have to recharge. Just be sure it\'s fully charged before you use it for golf.
- I have had the X40 for 5 months. I bought it primarily for golf. However, now I use it for exercise as much as golf. The interface with other apps like \"MyFitnessPal\" has been great. Although there are a couple software improvements I would like to see, the X40 has exceeded my expectations. For all major courses that I have played on, the X40 gave correct distances to hazards, turn, or pin location. You have select a pin location from about 8 choices but this is close enough for my game. On small local courses I have gotten wrong distances but I don\'t know if this is the course misinformation or the Garmin download. You can record which club you used after each shot. Unfortunately, it doesn\'t allow to see average distances for each club based on this data. You have go to each game to see stats. The information from X40 can be download to phone and computer. The computer program allows you to see what you did on each hole with a good image of hole layout. For exercise, it also beat my expectations. It tracks my exercise and MyFitnessPal tracks what I eat. The two programs talk so on either one I see all the information for a day. However, it doesn\'t show long term averages so you can\'t track progress. Would recommend X40 for both golf and/or fitness.
- my mother in law picked this out for herself.... so luckily she really liked her gift :-) one thing to note... this does way, way more than just read golf course distances. while getting used to it in our house over the holidays, it basically performed many of the functions of a fitbit or even the smart watch. one funny story - it is linked to her phone so when it rings, the watch is notified (nice for the golf course when you don\'t want to miss a call but don\'t want the noise) -- well, she was upstairs with the watch and her phone was downstairs with me and my father-in-law. Her phone rang and I quickly glanced at it and read out the name of the caller. Then my father-in-law and I naturally made a few comments about the person... just small talk about holiday plans etc. (whew!) Meanwhile, my mother-in-law (upstairs with the watch) , tapped the watch to get rid of the notification (or so she thought) but she actually answered her phone downstairs and the caller could hear our conversation about her! Beware and be nice!
