Garmin nüvi 40 4.3-inch Portable GPS Navigator(US Only) (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

  • Works great
  • Simplified to the point that it\'s really only good for entering a single destination, then following the instructions that it gives you.UPDATE: Overall I\'m still happy, but I have certainly found that the route often suggests turning onto very minor (or even one lane) roads instead of just staying on the main road to a destination.I\'ve used the TomTom devices in the past, but this is my first Garmin. This entry-level model has some missing features, but it\'s not that big of a deal:EDIT: You can get the entire turn-by-turn description of the route as well as a summary by touching the green \"next route instruction\" bar at the top.* No alternate route options. Of course you can start driving your own way and it will recalculate. It does have a \"Detour\" button that routes you around the next few hundred feet in front of you.* If you like to just poke around on the map and explore, it\'s a bit difficult. You can\'t search from the \'View Map\' interface, you must use \'Where to?\' as though you were going to navigate there. When you do this, it recenters the map on that location when you zoom in and out, which is great if you\'re in a moving car, but not if you just like to explore.Of course it has all the essentials to locate your destination by address/name/category. It still has these useful features:* Zoom in and out while navigating.* Display 3D or north-facing 2D.* Save favorite locations and \'home\'.* Quick access to recent destinations.* Display of arrival time (my favorite, though it seems quite optimistic), distance to destination, minutes remaining, or current time.* microSD card slot so you can easily add, for example, the European maps.On this 4.3\" model, I find the keyboard keys to be very small, but it somehow still worked better than expected. Having the Nuvi 50 just to get a slightly larger keyboard might be worth it.Even though the touchscreen is resistive, it\'s pretty responsive, and the software animations and scrolling make it seem \'lively\' to use. The software registers multiple touches while it\'s still drawing, so you can just \"tap tap tap\" quickly to move up/down or zoom. The unit itself seems solid and well built, considering it\'s the entry level item.I found the voices to work quite well (I installed the voice upgrades from the Garmin Web Updater program). I find it inconvenient that to adjust the Volume you must return to the \'Home\' screen. While navigating, there\'s no power source indication (no LED or battery symbol) -- when I first used it, the power plug apparently fell out, at which point the unit would just turn off. You could turn it back on, but soon afterward it would go blank again. The TomTom had a low battery symbol that would display.Note that the basic \'40\' version only contains Lower 49 state maps, while the 40LM appears to include all of USA and Canada.Hope this helps! Don\'t get lost out there, just hit Add to Cart.
  • This has turned out to be a great little gps. I bought one to replace my old Garmin street pilot that was acting up. I liked it, and it was so inexpensive I bought a second one for my wifes car. For less than a hundred bucks its a great product. I had originally thought I would skip gps altogether and just rely on my phone but I\'m glad I got it. Its very easy to use, gets a good signal so far has been very accurate. So why not 5 stars? A few things:1) There is no dash mount kit. Only a suction cup to stick it to your windshield. I dont care for that plus I am not sure its legal in CA. I have a beanie dash kit from my previous Garmin but was disappointed to see this unit does not fit. I would have buy a new beanie for this one. That bummed me out a little, it would have been nice if they kept the mounts the same size people who had previous accessories. I wound up placing the gps in the sunglass holder behind gear shift. It fits good there and still gets a good signal.2) The map update process is...a process. You have to install update software, you register the device, it downloads, it installs, it reboots, etc. . Mine went flawlessly but it takes a good 30 mins to complete. I hate having to install software on my computer because you never know how its going to interact with your system, what info its collecting, etc... But the update went well so its not a big negative but wanted to mention.3) There is no instructions or documentation. The unit is easy to use after you play with it but I would have liked at least a little cheat sheet. I had to go online and get the manual. Once I got the manual I learned a few features it had that I would never have realized. These are minor drawbacks and its probably what helps them keep the price so low so I really cant complain too much. Its a great unit, gets a good signal and is accurate.UPDATED A YEAR LATER - NO LONGER WORKSThe GPS worked great until I made the mistake of trying to update my maps. My device is now a paperweight. DO NOT try to update your maps, its not worth the risk. What a mistake.I got a pop up on my computer saying map updates avail. The unit had been working fine but I thought its good to keep it updated. I plugged in gps and it says sorry you dont have enough space to update your maps that I must get an SD card. Hmmm....bummer. OK, I went and got an SD card and inserted it into the gps and tried again. This time it began the install. It went got about 10% installed and an error came up saying could not communicate with device. I tried 3x more and same error and which point I said forget it I\'ll just stick with old maps. Not so fast buddy...I discover that my device has no maps!! NONE. I tried for 2 hours and same thing..the gps seems to go into sleep mode, the screen goes dark and the install fails. I now have a paperweight. I hope Garmin support can help. I am frustrated because it was an unforced error. I should have just left it alone.
  • I have purchased Garmin exclusively in the past, and currently have several different models. The previous unit I purchased in early 2012 was a lifetime maps & traffic model. I would never purchase a LMT again. The Traffic feature is a joke (very limited coverage areas, always incorrect as the information is quickly outdated and having to put up with the ads that pop up on the screen) and so is the Lifetime Maps feature. Garmin purposely puts only the amount of memory required into the unit when manufactured, and does not upsize it a bit to allow for the increasing future map sizes. So when you go to update your map a year or so down the road, it will not fit on your Garmin unless you download a partial map (1/4 of the US - take your pick of region - hopefully you are not planning to travel to any of the others), or add a memory card in the expansion slot that sticks out, falls out, costs extra $ and slows the unit down to a crawl. So an inexpensive \"throwaway\" unit like this model is perfect. For about $80, I can afford to replace it at least 2X for the price of the LMT model that is a worthless marketing gimic for Garmin anyway. The unit I am replacing is 6 years old and the unit was horribly slow and outdated, so this unit fits the bill. Lucky for Garmin that I prefer their interface, useability, design and menus. And the factory unit in my new truck is a Garmin dash unit also. Happy with this purchase and would recommend it to others. By the way, I passed on my 6 year old replaced unit to a friend of the family who had no GPS, with the warning that is was slow and outdated - but still a helpful tool most of the time - and they were happy to have it.
