Amcrest GPS GL300 GPS Tracker for Vehicles (4G LTE) - Portable Mini Hidden Real-Time GPS Tracking Device for Vehicles, Cars, Kids, Pets, Assets, Text/Email/Push Alerts, Twin Magnet Weatherproof Case
- PREFACE:I had purchased this Amcrest 4G LTE AM-GL300W-4G GPS tracker for one purpose in mind: to track my daughter and her boy scout troop\'s location in real-time as they embarked on a 2300+ miles road trip from Northern Virginia to the Florida Keys for a snorkeling, sailing and scuba adventure at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base (Boy Scouts of America) during the Christmas break. It was attached to my daughter\'s backpack and it gave us (and some of the parents from the troop that we shared the location tracking link with) the peace of mind and comfort knowing our kids\' location anytime. In that context, the tracker performed great, gave us all a peace of mind (which was the whole purpose of having this tracker) knowing where the troop was in real-time. Battery life of the tracker varies based on usage and was less than what was expected/advertised which we suspect was due to the frequency of the notifications (configurable) and usage, which you need to be aware of.HARDWARE/PACKAGINGThe Amcrest AM-GL300W-4G is actually an Amcrest re-packaged/labeled version of the the OEM \"GL300W\" GPS trackers that are also available from several manufacturers and vendors (search for \"GL300W GPS tracker\" and you will see several) that also advertise on Amazon and on the internet. Specs wise, the Amcrest unit has 4G LTE and GSM 900/1800 MHz cellular coverage and GPS, GLONASS for GPS. It is powered by a Li-Polymer 2600 mAh battery. It features IPX5 water resistance (an IP67 waterproof magnetic case is sold separately). A SIM card is preinstalled and requires activation and a service plan; the options are $19.99 – 60 second updates; $24.99 – 30 second updates; $29.99 – 15 second updates; $34.99 – 5 second updates. No annual contract is required for the service plan. Included in the package is also a 5V 1000mA 0.3A adapter with a mini-USB connector, a small zippered carrying pouch and a quick start guide documentation.PROS- Small and discrete- Accuracy is acceptable for the price point; confirm it also works on a boat sailing in the Florida Keys! :)- Battery life is good (but varies based on usage/number of notifications set); Amcrest claims the battery life as follows: up to 10-14+ days on a full charge with 60s updates, 7-8 days with 30s updates, 4-5 days with 15s updates, and 2-3 days with 5s updates. **SEE CONS**- Speed limit alerts is accurate but can drain battery quickly!- Shareable link (uses Google Maps) of the location that you can share with others that is valid for several days; it would be nice if you can adjust how long the link is valid for- Has both Apple and Android apps from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, as well as a web based interface. Wished it was more polished but it is functional for its purpose.- Notifications/alerts via email, SMS and push notifications. Be selective as to what you set/choose as the more alerts/notifications you set, the quicker the battery drains. I was not able to get text notification to work reliably with Google Fi which is a MVNO but email notification works great and is immediate.CONS- Be aware that the advertised battery life may be much less than what was advertised as it varies and depends on the frequency of notifications/alerts set and also how often you are \"pinging\" or checking the location of the GPS from either an app or from your computer/browser! While Amcrest claims 10-14+ days with the 60s update plan, our battery life was drained down to 63% within several hours of usage? I was puzzled as to why it was draining so quickly before I realized that it was due to the frequency of notifications (e.g. speed limit, # of start/stop, etc.) that the unit was sending to my email/SMS. Once I reduced the frequency of notifications or customized them to reduce the frequency, the battery didn\'t drain as much. Keep this mind!- The GPS tracker uses a mini-USB plug/cable for its charging cable. I wished Amcrest would change it to a Micro-USB or even better yet, USB-C as Mini-USB isn\'t as common. When our unit was running low on battery and my daughter didn\'t have the charger with her, no one in her troop had a mini-USB cable on hand. Had the connector been a Micro-USB or USB-C, she would have been able to charge the unit as most phones are either micro-USB or USB-C (not counting Apple\'s Lightning cable/connector, but I digress).- May have some accuracy and drift Issues (but also possibly related to the subscription plan selected due to latency issues?). I noticed it tends to show an offset either to the left or right of the road but this could be related to the frequency of the plan (30s update vs 5s update, hence it doesn\'t fully \"track\" or \"follow\" the curves or turns on the roads. Instead, it cuts through buildings, houses, etc. I\'m OK with it and still acceptable since you still get the idea of the location. I have attached screenshots from the Amcrest GPS PRO app showing an example of this.- Custom PDF/CSV Export feature is quite limited; it only shows the start and end time, distance (miles), duration (hours traveled), from/to address. It does not provide individual GPS position or coordinate reports.SUMMARYFor the price, performance and value, this Amcrest 4G LTE AM-GL300W-4G GPS tracker gave us the peace of mind and comfort knowing the exact location of where our daughter and her boy scout troop were at all times while they were on the road (and on a boat!), which was the main reason why I had purchased it in the first place.Just be aware of the caveats and keep the expectations of the battery life in mind (that it varies based on how you configure the alerts/notifications and usage), it\'s a great GPS tracker one which I would recommend.
- I was interested in buying this GPS tracker because I lend my car out to friends and members of my family on a regular basis and I am not entirely convinced that my car is being taken to only the locations where they have indicated they will be. The mileage on the car is frequently higher than it should be for a given trip, and they have it for longer periods of time than they indicated it would take to complete their planned activities. Certain areas of my city are known for being \"questionable\" so I make it clear I don\'t want my car there. This GPS tracker allows me to know where my car was at any given moment, and unfortunately, it confirmed what I suspected, that my car was being left in various areas of the city for extended periods of time when I was assured it would not be. Needless to say, a few people are no longer allowed to borrow my car.The manual makes it very easy to get the GPS tracker up, running, and operating. I found the device to provide very timely and accurate GPS tracking information. It easily pinpointed my car within about 3 feet or so. I didn\'t run into any glitches during operation. The software for Android was very easy to find, install, and use without any prior instruction. I found all the functions of the software were very intuitive for anyone that is proficient with apps designed for a smartphone. I didn\'t encounter any bugs or crashes while using the software.I have found a number of other uses for the GPS tracker beyond my initial reason for purchasing it. Setting up a geofence for my car, if I got a notice that my car has exceeded the boundaries I had established for it, when it either shouldn\'t be moving or at a very unusual time of night I would know my car was stolen. It would easily allow for it to be tracked and recovered quickly with the assistance of law enforcement due to the near real time nature of the tracking. This GPS tracker is also useful for my mother as she is elderly and has gotten lost more than once. Sometimes she isn\'t able to tell me where she is, and she finds GPS navigation too difficult to use. Having this product with her, I can locate her immediately without her having to do anything and I can provide her with guidance over the phone in order to help her navigate her way home or to her destination. The SOS button is also an invaluable feature because she could easily trigger it if she got into an accident or if she was having a medical issue and it would provide her exact location so she could get assistance as soon as possible. My mother also found the geofence feature endlessly useful for her vehicle. My father has a neurological condition and should not be driving. However, he forgets that he shouldn\'t be driving sometimes, takes the keys and goes for a drive, and more than once it has ended up with him stranded somewhere having no idea how he got there or where he is. This worries my mother to no end and she basically just has to wait for someone to find him and have the authorities bring him home. She constantly worries he will take the car and either get lost or crash the car and hurt himself or someone else. This tracker allows her to know when her car leaves the residence without her knowing and would provide tracking so we would be able to locate my father even if he doesn\'t know where he is. It could also potentially allow us to stop him quickly after leaving the house so he couldn\'t go very far since we would get an alert shortly after the geofencing was exceeded. It was also useful for keeping track of my dog. My dog loves spending time outside, but with everything I have to do I can\'t be outside all the time with him. The issue with this is that we have recently had a problem with people\'s dogs suddenly going missing from their front yard. This device is small and light enough (for a 75+ lbs dog) that I could easily attach it to the back of his collar and have peace of mind if he escaped from the yard or was taken by someone that I\'d immediately know once the GPS tracker moved beyond its designated area. This would allow my dog to spend more time outside without me having to watch him every minute.Overall, given how many uses I have found for this GPS tracker, I expect that it will be my go to item for Christmas this year. I don\'t doubt the people I am going to gift it to will find it to have just as much utility as I did.
- Let me make a long story short. Suspected my then-GF was bumpin\' uglies with her new boss. Felt weird about being the psycho type and slapping a GPS tracker underneath her car. Said screw it and did it anyway. Best decision I ever made. Literally stared at my phone in disbelief as she drove to his house on a Friday night, didn\'t leave until the morning, then went BACK for seconds the following night. Fast forward a year and a half later - that trick has long been history, and me and my new love - the one who is actually worthy of me and my daughter - are expecting our own baby girl in July. Trust ain\'t enough when you can clearly see the signs of trust being violated. My only warning - if you CAN\'T HANDLE the truth, do NOT buy this. Because the truth is what you will receive, served blunt and cold on a paper plate.
