  • I purchased this prior to taking a long trip. I had taken this trip before, so I knew where I was going, but always seemed to get off course on short side trips along the way, so thought a Garmin would be nice. My sister has an older one and let me use hers on a number of occasions and I liked it.I found that the new unit didn\'t always take me via the most efficient routes, having known where I was going. I quite often would ignore its instructions and go the more efficient route on my own. My sisters older one would say \"re configuring\" in that situation. This one doesn\'t and I missed that about it. For example, it had me going on one route in an up and over pattern, as opposed to a straight line to the destination. I knew that was an inefficient way of going and planned on taking my own route. I stopped for coffee, the unit shut off, and when I got back in it had reconfigured with the more efficient route! Also, there isn\'t a \"favorites\" icon which makes life easier for frequently traveled routes, as opposed to my sisters older one which had that feature. I definitely miss that. The screen split for upcoming intersections is nice. F.Y.I., IT ONLY SHOWS when you approach a complicated intersection, it doesn\'t show the road lanes all the time. While it has the ability to slide the display with your finger like a smart phone, it obviously isn\'t designed to function that way, and isn\'t very sensitive when dragging your finger. Use the arrows on the side, it is much easier. Despite the lack of sensitivity for dragging, the buttons are all sensitive. So WHY BUY A GPS UNIT, when a smart phone has an app for it?*A GPS has a nicer, easier to understand display.*It can be mounted on the window or dashboard, not just thrown in your drink cup holder.*If you are on a limited data plan on your smartphone, it doesn\'t eat into your time.*You can use your smartphone at the same time as the GPS unit or for multiple searches.UPDATE: 3 years and going strong. I update it frequently through my home computer.*Another plus to having this GPS unit vs. using your smartphone, you can see the screen much easier. This unit has directed me to addresses in the Appalachian Mountains, that were in the middle of the woods, and it knew to tell me exactly where the location I was going to was (it essentially told me where the hidden driveway was). On another occasion, also in the Appalachians, it knew EXACTLY where an address was, but it was nothing but woods (I had been given the wrong address), but Garmin knew where that address should have been, had there actually been a house there! If I had to buy this again, I would spend the extra money for the lifetime traffic information. This has free lifetime map updates. I didn\'t quite understand the whole lifetime traffic thing when I bought this. I may end up buying another just so I can get the lifetime traffic too.
  • Still learning about my Garmin 66LMT, but it looks really good, so far !! I programmed a 30-mile trip into it, and it got me there quickly and with no fuss or muss -- or any voices yelling out \"recalculating\", as so many others have complained about. The 6-inch (diagonal) screen is easy to read, with real-time elevation, posted speed limits, current vehicle speed, over-speed warning, up-ahead direction indicator, distance before turns, and a legible map were just a few of the features that make for easy navigation -- and without all the usual \"Oh, s**t, we missed the off-ramp!\" exclamations along the way !! Example: Samantha says \"Three-quarters of a mile ahead, turn right onto 75th Avenue.\" -- which gives me a plenty of time to get in the proper lane. Wife and I both liked the clear, well-enunciated voice (Samantha) -- and the timely, easy-to-follow instructions that she gave. What we liked most about our new gizmo was the \"HOME\" button -- the machine knows where we live, and it took us there quickly and by a very convenient route. It has a \"qwerty\" keyboard and a numbers pad, so entering info while on the road is quick and easy -- but PLEASE don\'t attempt it while driving !! Anyways, we love our Garmin 66LMT, and look forward to some long, out-of-state trips. We got a great \"50 Dollars Off\" deal at Amazon, too !! UPDATE: 5/25/17 - 50,000 miles later. I rigged up a trick mounting system for the Garmin right away, and tested it out locally before setting off on any extended trips -- and it all paid off nicely, as we\'ve used the Garmin on trips through over 30 states, with never a problem with getting lost or confused. We just relaxed and let the sweet voice of Samantha get us where we wanted to go. My wife and I have driven through all 50 states over our many years of marriage, but we\'ve never enjoyed our motor trips as much as we have since we hooked up our Garmin 66MLT. Highly recommended !
