Garmin Friction Mount

  • Windshield mounted Garmin GPS systems just don\'t work. I\'d recommend you try this item, if your tired of grabbing your GPS off the floor doing 60 mph- it\'s just not worth it, we\'ve all been there. Should have gotten this years ago. I do wish they provided a larger & sturdier clear plastic protector for the the sticky underside (which you remove when in use). If your like me & want to remove the Garmin friction mount when not in use, I just put it in a ziplock bag to protect the sticky underside from dust, etc. Read that this or a similar item left discoloration marks on a dashboard- would not like to happen but as stated above safety first, a beautiful dashboard\'s of no value in the junk yard.
  • I have to admit that the whole friction mount thing doesn\'t _sound_ like it would work well (I guess people are just too used to having things slide around on top of their dashboard should anyone be foolish enough to put something there), but it does work and works well. This is much better than any suction cup mount I\'ve used. (In my experience they fall off every 4-5 months no matter what, perhaps due to temperature changes in my area of the country.) Not only is this thing stable but having the GPS down close to the dashboard keeps it from blocking any of the view out the window in my car, and probably most cars.I have an Audi TT (2001) which has a rather curved dashboard in the area where I and probably most people would want to put this. At first I didn\'t think that it was going to make enough contact to avoid slipping, but it actually works! You can\'t tell from the product photo, but the base is more flexible than it looks and holds its shape after you bend it. So, you can shape it around rounded humps on your dashboard as long as they aren\'t too severe. This is even with the near-freezing temperatures we have around here right now. Also not obvious from the photos, the bottom of the base is perfectly smooth and looks sticky until you actually touch it. Then you find that it\'s like some sort of polished-smooth malleable silicone rubber type stuff that somehow won\'t slide against anything, even without any sticky/tacky stuff on it. It\'s almost like it\'s sticky without being sticky. (No adhesive junk to come lose on your dashboard.) It\'s just putty soft and smooth surfaced enough that it has tremendous friction, sort of like a super soft racing tire surface on steroids.I was trying to decide between this mount and the  beanbag version , and I seem to have made the right choice for my situation in buying this one. The feeling I got is that this one is better if you\'re not going to move the mount between vehicles (that is, treat it as though it was just permanently attached even though it isn\'t). The beanbag is probably better if you want to move it between vehicles all the time. This rubbery one blends in with my dashboard better, but I\'m guessing that if I moved it around all the time the almost-sticky bottom would pick up dust and I\'d end up having to rinse it off periodically. I haven\'t seen the bottom surface of the beanbag, but I\'m guessing it depends more on weight and typical high friction rubber than slick super-high-friction silicone type stuff.I looked up the weight of both this mount and the beanbag version, and I think the beanbag was like 2 lbs and this one is 1.6 lbs or something. So the beanbag might be better to offset the weight of heavier GPS units. I don\'t know how heavy they get, but my GPS is only 5oz or something at most, so I thought 1.6lbs would be sufficient weight and it seems that I was right.Since I have a sports car, I can conceivably pull some serious Gs. I can\'t say I\'ve really maxed out the lateral acceleration of my car with this mount on the dash (it\'s winter here, ice, wet roads, etc.) but it seriously doesn\'t show any signs of going anywhere. This is with my typical faster-than-most-people speeds when taking 90 degree turns. Just the weight of the thing plus the ridiculously high-friction bottom seems to be more than enough to hold it in place even if the whole bottom isn\'t completely in contact with the dash.I kind of wish it would lay flatter against the weird excessively rounded part of my dashboard where I want to put it, and it would be nice if the base would swivel or something (though that might put it off balance), but there\'s no doubt that it works. Much better than a suction cup, or anything bolted/adhered to the dash that likely couldn\'t be removed without damage. I wish I had gotten one of these a LONG time ago.
  • I love it. It stayed in place just as advertised. I was surprised it never moved at all even though I placed it on an uneven dashboard.
  • I have used my garmin friction mount for over a week now and it has not moved one time. The only thing that I did not like was the stickness on the bottom as it gets on the dashboard or where ever you put it immediately. I wrote to the company and they assured me that it would go away in 4 to 8 weeks if you did not put the mount back on the dash. I was concerned in when I traded the car and there was this awful grease spot. Let\'s hope they are right. I did put a zip lock bag on the bottom of the mount after taking it off the dash at the end of the day and putting it on the floor or console where ever i want it to be and could do the same on the dashboard. Just pull out the ziplock bag and begin your trip. I love the size and the fact that you can fold it down and leave the gps right on the mount. When parking my car when shopping I remove the mount from the dashboard and put it down on the floor or on my equinox I have a small space right in front of the gear shift and it fits perfectly there and it is out of sight. No one sees it so less change of break in. Gave it a 4 instead of a 5 just because of the substance that it leaves on the dash. Was packaged well and arrived on time. Thanks amazon. It is now 4 months later and I still have the oily spots that the company assured me they would go away in 4 to 8 weeks. Well believe me I have not used the friction mount for months because I found the cupholder mount much easier to see and navigage with and the spots are still there. I printed off the email that said they would go away but buyer beware as they are not gone and I have used several things to try to remove them and it has not helped. Very disappointed as I think they just bald faced lied and I was stupid enough to believe them. If you want oily spots on your dash then by this. I only used for less than two weeks and am sorry I bought it. Check into cupholder you will be very happy no spots.
  • Stays put. Eliminates falling off suction cup on window. Stays in place.
