Garmin Hard Carrying Case for Approach, Oregon, and Dakota Series Handheld GPS

  • Cons: It\'s a little clunky, doesn\'t seal but since the GPS is waterproof it doesn\'t have to. For the size I would have liked to have seen a pocket/slot for extra batteries. It\'s a little tricky getting the GPS off of it to change batteries or to just use without the case.Pros: The GPS is held very secure inside the case and will not accidentally fall out when opened. See comment about getting it out above. If you are wearing a vest, harness, or something to clip the included carabiner to, it is quite handy, especially at mid to upper chest level, some may find it usable at waist level. The GPS is secured inside and when you unfasten the lid it just flops open with the GPS horizontal giving you a good view of it. In this position it will tend to swing from side to side, but with a little practice the GPS can be used hands free while walking. It is easy to close and fasten. It protects the GPS from bumps and scratches. It will free-up a pocket and make your GPS easy to get at, but you will have to unclip the carabiner to hand it to someone else or set down for a stationary reading.Best uses are search and rescue, forrest/field work like trail blazing, Not good for geocaching in populated areas as it sticks out like a sore thumb and attracts attention. (One person I met on a trail thought it was a heart monitor or something. LOL) Not good for cycling. Its best use is off-road and out of civilization.
  • I bought this largely for storage and when packing my Oregon in luggage, not so much for use outdoors. For fun, I took it hiking with the Oregon 550 installed, and found it actually works very well on the trail in spite of being a bit large and bulky (my initial perception). For hiking, try installing it on a main pack strap near your chest. When you open it, the GPS is clipped into the inside of the case with a clip and strap at the back, much like the carabiner/strap that came with your GPS, then cinches down with velcro so it doesn\'t move around inside the case. The unit stays in the half that is opposite the external attachment strap and carabiner, and some thin webbing on each side prevents the case from opening past 90 degrees, meaning it is then parallel to the ground and at a perfect viewing height if mounted on your chest. The carabiner is easily removed if you don\'t need it. Below the biner is a velcro/nylon strap with loop that attaches readily to a variety of things, much like the back of a camera case has. You can\'t see any of it in the picture here on Amazon. The gray strap with the black plastic buckle sticking out in the picture is part of the closure system, not for attachment to your gear. When reading this review, don\'t confuse the gray straps outside with the black strap and plastic clip inside the case. The case doesn\'t allow for use of the 550\'s built in camera, but removal from the case for using the camera would take maybe 15 seconds, as would replacing it when you are done, so it isn\'t a big deal if you aren\'t in a hurry. As far as protection, I doubt you will find anything that comes close and still allows for ready use while on the trail.
  • I bought this case after my Garmin Golf GPS\' screen cracked because the previous case I was using didn\'t protect it well enough. I was using a semi-rigid camera case that my Garmin fit nicely into. After the screen cracked I decided to invest in a \"hard\" case and since this was made specifically for my unit, I bought it.Case is well made and does exactly what it\'s suppose to do. I think, like others have said, that the case could actually be a lot smaller and more compact than it is. The unit clips on by a flap on the inside of the case and velcros to the inside to keep it from flopping around. If not for the velcro the case would just \"float\" in there, way too much room. But with that being said, it does a great job of protecting the unit and the clips all around are secure and well made. This case does not zip or close very securely, even with the cover snapped closed, I can still pry apart the edges and peek inside. Though the Unit is waterproof the case is not.So, all in all I\'m happy, but it would get 5 stars if it was smaller and the case closed more securely with a zipper or even if the attached strap could be adjusted tighter and make it more snug.
  • There are certainly cheaper cases to buy and I had to think twice before buying it, however it is a great idea. Easy to open, when it is open the GPS is securely locked in place. Easy to slide the GPS in the lock. So I think it well worth the price. quite perfect. Looks and feels of high quality.
  • ...Had a Garmin Hard Carrying Case for my Oregon 450t for several years; I\'m completely pleased with it. The negative reviews have me puzzled. Perhaps the reviewers want something more compact. I find that the large size provides the kind of protection I wanted, plus it is easier to manipulate in an outdoor setting, especially with gloves on. I have used this product in all kinds of weather, dust, snow, rain and hard-knocks and it works perfectly. I really like the way it can be carabinered to the strap of a backpack so it can be flipped-open, the \"on-off\" button is easily accessed (another rationale for a large enclosure, by-the-way) and is at the perfect distance from my eyes for easy reading. This set-up is so good I would urge anyone using a pack that lacks an attachment on the shoulder strap to sew-on a d-ring to the packstrap on your \"handed\" side (right strap if you are right-handed, etc.) When hiking, cross-country skiing or hunting, this is incredibly handy.
  • My wife bought this case for our new Garmin Colorado. My initial thought was way too much money for just a case. My second thought was it\'s too bulky. Then we took the new purchase hiking in the Adirondack Mountains. I\'m very happy with the purchase. The case is wonderful, it attached easily/securely to my back pack, it allowed me to open, look and close the case with one hand (once I got use to the buckle). My GPS kept getting the signals even when the case was closed. And the case gives protection to the screen and from rain.Lastly it\'s a good place to store it when it\'s not being used. I even pull the batteries from my GPS and store them in the case.
