- I have had Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and now back to Garmin. The Magellan 3045 was too slow to acquire a signal and would often continue with directions as though I had followed the given route, though I had not. Eventually it would straighten itself and locate where I was but not soon enough for my liking. I liked the Tom Tom until I did an upgrade. It never worked well after that and i lost the voice feature which is important to me. There was no viable solution and others were having the same problem. Since I paid extra to have the ability to update but had problems afterwards, I will not buy a TomTom again. The older Garmin that I have (in boyfriend\'s car now) has keys that often stick, especially in cold weather. Very frustrating;with this new Garmin I believe that will no longer be a problem. The voice instructions are fairly clear. Pronunciations can be off but one can get the gist.So far, with limited use, the Garmin nuvi 55 works pretty quickly and reroutes well. Though I wouldn\'t say the routes given are ones I would take in an area I know but they do get a person to the intended goal. Some POIs it does not find. I was testing with my local landfill the other day. It finds others but not the closest one for me. I had even typed in the name of the landfill. It did work with the address.I have not tested the traffic feature.Features that I don\'t like:1) The chime that is triggered when nearing a school zone. Loud enuf, it makes me jump! I am unable to find a way to turn that feature off. I want the volume up to hear the directions but this chime just seems annoying. If any one knows how to disable that feature I would be grateful for a comment! I don\'t feel I need to be alerted to a school zone - I have eyes for that.2) No external way to adjust the volume. The TomTom had that and I found it much easier to use and safer.3) I can\'t find a way to make it beep before a turn. It definitely gives instructions early but then sometimes it is timely before a turn is needed, sometimes only right upon a turn. I had gotten use to the beep for verification with the Magellan. Again, if anyone knows how to have the Garmin 55 beep just before a turn, I would appreciate knowing how to set that.4) Minor gripe: As another reviewer noted - there seems to be no way to clear one selection from the recent list. It\'s either clear all or none. I would have preferred to have the ability to clear one or two but not have to do all.5) FYI: Car speed shown on the Garmin 55 is off by 4 mph from my car\'s speedometer. I am not using this gadget for my speed so doesn\'t matter much to me but might be good for someone else to know.Even with these gripes or preferences not found, I find this Garmin should be very useable(and hopefully reliable) for my purpose, therefore the 4 stars. Not my dream GPS unit but then none really seem to be.
- I bought this Garmin nuvi 65 LM GPS Navigator and a UK/Ireland cardThis Navigator saved our marriage.Went to Ireland for 3 weeks, rented a car and drove over 2000 miles.Never got lost once with this card. This is a newer card and has all the new and old roads in it program. I programed the card with 100\'s of wave points/Favorite place and all our B&B/Hotels. I did this at home BEFORE we went to Ireland using the Free \"Base Camp\" software available at Garmin site and Google Maps to get the GPS coordinates to enter.I gave all points a P001&name of the place, P002, P003. . ... My Wife had a paper itinerary of what/where we wanted to go and for each place she add the Garmin P00X number so Once we got to Ireland I said were to? She looks at the itinerary and tells me the Number, entered P00X in Garmin and off we go. We did this for 3 weeks and it took us completely around the country AND Never got lost once. This card knew ever back road and got us to some very out of the way sites my wife wanted to see. Besides how I used it, there are many built in Points of Interest that are included. One great one is CITY PARKING. You can select this feature when you get into a large town and it will direct you to parking! A MUST! The big cities are no place for the unarmed tourist to try and Navigate without the Garmin telling you your every turn.PS There are Very few street signs in Ireland, this makes paper Maps almost useless, and if there is a street sign it probably not the same name as you have written down, seems the streets all have 3 or 4 names/numbers. Also Im sure all Garmin units are different But turn on the UTURN feature, this will tell you that you missed a turn, its easy to. If you don’t turn on the feature the Garmin will recalculate a new route (without telling you) and take you down some very interesting roads, I think a golf cart would have a hard time getting through some of those roads. All in All we never got lost, you can always change the map to show you the big picture and where you are.ALL tourist that we meet that had paper maps were fighting with each other, they All agreed that they had been lost more than several times the Roads are narrow depending where you want to go they are Very Rural, watch out you do not hit someone sheep in the road.It\'s cheaper to buy a unit and take it with you (with your Pre-programed locations) than to Rent one at the Rental car CompanyEnjoy Ireland Get a GPS and program it BEFORE you Go
