Garmin Approach S6 Golf Watch

  • I purchased this to replace my S1 that had lost its battery life after 2 1/2 years. Initially, I was very happy; however, after 8 months of use, I experienced a problem with charging and posted this as an issue when I contacted support: \"Screen is black. Connected to AC outlet: Nothing. USB port: Nothing. Unconnected/stand alone: Nothing. Used yesterday and it was fine.\" Customer support responded and intimated I was some sort of cretin and told me in amazing detail how to clean the contacts. Duh. Not my first Garmin as I stated above...Now, 3 weeks later, another issue has arisen and I replied to their original response with:I cleaned the contacts before I sent the original email yet the same problem persists, albeit intermittently. I am not a novice user of your products. However, now, in addition to the aforementioned problem,• The screen fades out after about 3 holes on a fresh charge (I never turn on my unit until I\'m \'on deck\' at the golf course),• I get ghost images from screens appearing behind the active screen, and• It is impossible to discern the hole layout due to all the background ghost clutter regardless of lighting conditions.• The battery will not last a full 5 hours (see first bullet above) even when it indicates a 100% charge before play. I use only the hole layoutfeature (and even then not on every hole), no driving distance, scoring, or any of the other special features and I don\'t get anywhere near the \"weekend of GPS golf with up to 10 hours in full GPS and up to 20 weeks, depending on mode, before the lithium-ion battery needs to be recharged\" as you tout on your site. This should not be happening with a device less than a year old. I play golf about 1.5x per week on average in Southern California -- temperate climate with few extremes--highs in the low 80s, lows in the upper 60s. When I\'m not wearing the unit on course, it\'s at home where the median temperature is 70. Never has it been left in a hot car, nor has it been dropped.I also own a G5 but I have been getting horizontal screen striations for months now, indicating the software is malfunctioning. I was doing regular updates prior to purchasing the S6.I bought my S6 as a replacement for the G5 and my S1 (the battery of the latter giving up life on the planet 2.5 years after purchase????). The S1 has since been relegated to the recycling station.Garmin has been notoriously famous for product quality; however, my personal experience with their units falls very short of that mark.Today I received a response from CS: I need to send them my receipt before they\'ll issue an RMA. Very sad, indeed. One of my buddies also bought one recently. Already experiencing the ghosting problem and all yardages are about 18 yards off the mark.Update: 11/17 Garmin has given me an RMA so it was returned yesterday. Hoping to get my watch fixed and back to the links soon. I like the watch, and like the fact that I don\'t have to have two different units in the cart--my handheld and my watch--the course layout on the watch is sufficient and can be adjusted with a tee to give you yardages to lay-ups and hazards. Because I\'ve received an RMA to return the watch I\'ve upgraded to 4 stars because I LIKE the watch. It doesn\'t get 5 stars because of the repair issues.
  • i have used this for several rounds and have tried to use all the features. i like the watch very much. with a few tweaks, the next generation is going to be great.battery life. 2 18 hole rounds. charges quickly.yardage. reads quickly, better than my old S1. really happy with the quick responselight weight i like itscoring. i thought this would be useless when i bought it. it is so easy that i do use it to score and keep putts. really simple. still, you got a scorecard, so no big dealfairway view when i decided to buy it, i figured maybe i\'d use it. and i did. obviously the screen is small, so don\'t expect miracles. but it shows water and traps. use a tee to tap the trap, and you\'ll see the yardage to it.green view well, not so much. you\'re a hundred yards away and the pin looks like it\'s in back. so you can move the pin back and it adjusts the yardage. but not exact, just guessing. so no accuracy here. can do the same in your head. almost useless. when they key it in to the actual flag, then that will be great.tempo training. i think this aspect is underrated. they sell metronomes that just give the tempo. this gives the tempo, and says( note i say says) that it gives a graph and ratio. this takes a bit to understand, but it\'s not too hard. a wonderful idea to help your timing. unfortunately, my watch will give the graph and ratio about 20% ofthe time. very frustrating and that part therefore is useless to me. i\'m going to ask garmin if it\'s just my watch or a universal complaint.instructions this is where i say give them 40 lashes. the instructions are very cursory. no where near detailed enough. aggrivating. you\'ll get it by trial and error eventually. you would think they would pay someone to spend one day, write a very detailed instruction manual, and put it online. how much would that cost? and they ask 400 bucks for the watch?so bottom line is if the price doesn\'t matter much, you\'ll enjoy playing with it. if it\'s a lot of money to you, you won\'t feel like you got good value. . i\'m glad i bought it and want to keep it. just got to figure out why the tempo timing isn\'t working right.
  • As a wristband device, the Garmin S6 is somewhat distracting. The wristband is too small and in order to secure it, I have to over tighten it, which is uncomfortable and during a game of golf, sweating under the band causes itching and redness. I might have been better off to purchase a white one, since black heats up more in the sun.Functionally, it performs well. The satellites are quickly found, all of the courses I have played came up quickly and the distance measurements compare well with other golf devices. It was a little difficult to learn how to use the S6 because it has so many functions. It is too easy to accidentally tap the screen or hit one of the buttons and then you need to reset your S6 back to the correct hole. But after multiple uses, I have learned how to use it.The hole layout function is useful for new courses, but using the S6 to keep score is too cumbersome since you need to switch between functions during the round. Maybe as I get more accustomed to the S6, that function will become easier to use.The charging device is a little temperamental. I found I need to check to be sure it is charging when I first attach the charger. I found I have to turn off the device, then turn it on again to start the charging process. I don\'t understand why Garmin didn\'t use a mini-USB as the connection to the watch, rather than a bulky snap fit cap with exposed electrical contacts. Battery life is not an issue, but unless you start with a full charge, you cannot play 36 holes without recharging.Overall, I like the S6. It performs well, but has some drawbacks. I would say the extra functions are not worth the extra price over some of Garmin\'s lower priced models.
