Garmin Nuvi 2699LMTHD GPS System

  • Love my Garmin Nuvi 2699LMTHD GPS! Yes, it could be better but then again what\'s perfect. I had purchased a re-manufactured model to save some money and it has paid off. My first unit started to fail a month shy of a year. It would refuse to provide traffic information because it thought the car adapter was not the correct unit.Garmin service was fantastic and they first offered a free car power adapter which ended up not being the solution. However, as soon as i reported back that the car power adapter did not fix the problem they offered a replacement unit free of charge with free shipping in both directions! Way to go Garmin. I had purchased an extra warranty with Square Trade nevertheless to cover things just in case - it had paid off for other items I had purchased. This model appealed to me because of the 6\" screen, the life-time subscriptions to maps and traffic, and Garmin\'s reputation. I tend to research products to death before deciding to purchase one because I hate the idea of not getting what I had paid for and the inconvenience, and frustration of buying lemons. I put off purchasing any GPS for two years because the data I found had convinced me that the technology was not refined enough to offer a reliable product. In 2015 the reviews convinced me that some GPS units would be suitable and worth the investment. After owning this unit, I am convinced I made the correct choice. it\'s not perfect, but its pretty close, nothing some software algorithms couldn\'t fix.The traffic reporting isn\'t bad but I do not rely on it as my only source. I check Google maps and Waze before heading out to brave the DC Beltway or RT295/395 corridor every morning and evening. After consulting those two sources, my route is decided, then I use the Garmin to provide the real-time information. It usually takes a little too long after I am underway before the Garmin reports the delays but once it does, it usually gets it right. I have used it to skirt long delays on some occasions and it has helped to perform real-time short diversions a handful of times. Usually it reports that I am on \"best possible route\" but I don\'t always believe that to be the case. One of its weaknesses, is that it does note seem to know all the back roads that I do, or at least it does not suggest these routes unless traffic is really bad on the main routes. That said, it does a good job, and certainly has lowered my stress level by giving me a good estimate for my arrival time. The interface is mostly intuitive although the some of the settings require some experimentation to fully comprehend. Garmin as a large data base that can be updated with an easy connection to Garmin Express on a PC or Mac. The process is painless but interestingly the Garmin Express app seems to need more frequent updating than the Nuvi. The Four Square location app installed in the unit works well but ironically will not always find the business location closest to your location - not sure why it would tell me to go 200 miles to find the closest grocery store. It is still useful and has pointed me to new restaurants and venues close to home that i had not known existed.Overall, I recommend the Nuvi 2699LMTHD. Its a solid performer.Proseasy to use, voice command works reasonably wellgood, no-cost traffic reporting (for life of the device)free map updates for lifereliable, good quality and Garmin stands behind their productgood user interfacegood valueConssome small glitches remain - do not press \"Go\" before a new proposed route is fully loaded because the software will crash and the unit will reboot (Garmin has not fixed this entirely, but not as sensitive as it had been a year ago)Address entry can be a little clunky sometimes, cannot always find the correct street or autocomplete prevents a complete entry to be made - does not happen often but sure is irritating when it doesslow to identify traffic after turn on - can lead you the wrong way before correcting itself and directing you to the better routeWould buy a Garmin GPS again.
  • Pros: Nice screen, responsive touch screen, pretty quick response rate. Bluetooth connect to my android Smartphone, memory card slotCons: Being used to Magellan and address book functions, this Garmin has a lot of bells and whistles that I do not need or use and no specific address book that you can easily edit, look up your stored addresses, or even check your destination address while traveling.I downloaded and read the manual and used email and phone contact with Garmin support which were pretty responsive (Pro) and they tried to help but tech support can not overcome design issues. I also downloaded the free Garmin smart phone app onto my LG pro phone. No instruction in the manual about the app. I knew to Connect to your Smartphone via bluetooth to your Garmin, and they worked (Pro)Three functions on the App - send, save and share. You give the App access to your contacts and you can select and send the contact to your GPS. The name of the contact does not send - only the address. Then you have to go to \"Where to\" as there is no address book per se on a Garmin. Then go to \"Saved\" and click on the \"i\" icon after selecting the correct address where you can then give the imported address a name. The default name is the street address - huh? So you must first deleting the street address which is the default name that tranferred via your Garmin Smartphone app. Later when you choose that imported name/contact you will no longer see the street address or city or zip code although I am told it is there, sort of, as GPS coordinates.Does this sound confusing, complicated, and non-intuitive - it is. Garmin sent me a POI Loader with link to instructions to try and import my contacts/address from my computer. As far as I can tell unless you have the GPS coordinates for your addresses, the POI loader will tell you your .csv file is INVALID. I mean who has GPS coordinates for all your addresses. Better to spend the time manually entering your addresses (unless you were a former Garmin user and have them backed up another way). This is my first Garmin.Garmin uses GPS coordinates which is fine but when saving an address, or going to an address, I want to see the full address street with umber, city and zip code just in case I entered it wrong and/or to avoid going to the same street in a different city in a different state. Since Garmin went to the trouble of developing a Smartphone App, they really need to make it easy (and it should be easy in this day and age) to import the desired contacts with full name and address into the GPS address book or as Garmin calls it \"Saved\" . Garmin Nuvi, as told by the tech person, has never used the address book theme just Saved (up to 1000) or Recent (50 then rolls over). For all of this I am looking at manually entering about 100 addresses into the Garmin as doing it manually does let you save the address with a name and lets you see the address as well (Amen). However my test of the Nuvi was to put an address in for place in the country about 14 miles from me. My google maps had it correct but this brand new Garmin Nuvi could not find it - duh. I realize all new devices have a learning curve, but I would recommend changes to make it more user friendly and intuitive. It is no wonder sales of GPS are slipping due to Smartphone apps like Goggle maps, Waze and even Mapquest although none are perfect. I still need a GPS as I travel a lot and can end up in areas where my Cell phone drops its connectivity. Also everytime I start the Nuvi up I have to agree to terms. Just a pain. I mean everytime. I love the message if you hit \"No\" - it says take it back to who you purchased it from within 7 days. Other issues or FYI \"Saved\" on a Nuvi takes you to saved address - and has a little heart symbol - cute - Maybe about an address book symbol would be more intutive. A heart to me means someting I lover or a favorite. My dentist address is not something I love. Also \"Recent\" takes to well to recent but you can NOT access any of these without pressing \"Where to\" first. Oh well. I am learning. So unless you already are use to the Garmin way of doing things - which I assume many are - there is a learning curve. The Garmin Smart Phone App is pretty useless for my purposes. Maybe that can be fixed.
